Hull Number Decals ?

Post by alphaco »

I'm in process of making white hull / bridge numbers for Nimitz CVNs to accompany the deck decals. Below is the first test bridge / hull decal. Still needs refinement. What other hull numbers would you be interested in seeing produced?

Excellent idea - only it's the wrong font style for the task...

Try looking up "Amarillo USAF" or "AIRBORNE" (both basically a derivative of the Star Trek Enterprise block lettering and based off of classic USAF block).

It will need to be hollowed out since the style on USN carriers is usually an outline instead of a solid font.

In Corel, you can convert the font into graphics and do whatever you want after that, not sure what you are using to create the decals though...

Correct, it is the wrong font. Amarillo is also not quite right for the numbers. Actually the correct font is LongBeach. The above is the first test run thus it still needs refinement. I need to add a true type output in order to scale the LongBeach font down to this tiny size. That's next weekends project:-)

Since I'm starting down this road I'm looking for input as to what other ships / periods people would be interested in for hull numbers so I can work the design for those at the same time.

An ALPs MD5000. Had to revert a PC back to Windows XP to get it to work. Problem is the white ink cartridges are somewhat hard to find and expensive.

There is actually an alternative to Alps now - not at all cheap though:

Oki has had a laser capable of using white toner for a while. Only around $3500 for the printer. At least it will work with modern software!

Now all you have to do is convince your company's procurement department that your office needs one of those printers.

Yeah - I think I'd spend a lot less money keeping my old Alps 1300 going before shelling out $3500...

Of course, if I won the lottery, hmmm...

alphaco,

Could use Hull numbers for the other GHQ modern US Navy ship models. Suggest the following class of ships:

1. LHD Wasp Class – Hull & Superstructure numbers 1 thru 8
2. BB Iowa class – Hull numbers 61 thru 64
3. CGN California class – Hull numbers 36 & 37
4. CG Bunker Hill class – Hull numbers 52 thru 73, also Ticonderoga class numbers 47 thru 51
5. DDG Arleigh Burke class – (Flight I & II) Hull numbers 51 thru 78 & (Flight IIA) Hull numbers 79 thru 126
6. DDG Spruance class – Hull numbers 963 thru 992 and one for 997
7. FFG Oliver Hazard Perry class – Hull numbers 7 thru 61
8. FFG Knox class – Hull numbers 1052 thru 1097

Could also use decal hull numbers for modern Soviet ships too, but don’t have correct hull numbers for the different class of ships.

Thanks!

Thank you! Was not even thinking of Wasp and BBs. Will add them to the list.
