modern hull numbers

Post by RedDragon »

I second WW2navyguy's suggestions including for the Soviet ships which I also don't have research on hand for; I would however prioritize Soviet & JMSDF deck decals higher than any hull numbers, but I figure the hull numbers are much easier to produce.

Also it would make sense to compliment the WWII carrier deck decals with numbers when it is feasible though, again, on a lower level of priority than any outstanding deck decals.

But I could imagine the hull numbers being a wanted change of pace from deck decals.

RedDragon,

I am working on JMSDF & Soviet Decks. Promise

And thank you both for the suggestions on where to start on Hull Numbers. I am now just waiting for some new, very thin transparent paper as the stuff I'm using for decks is a bit too think for such small hull decals.

Could also use decal hull numbers for modern Soviet ships too, but don’t have correct hull numbers for the different class of ships.
The problem with Soviet, and perhaps current Russian, ships is that those big numbers are not hull numbers but pennant numbers. Potentially every time a Soviet ship changed home station the pennant number could change. But not always

Now I have a list :P of the Soviet ships in the Persian Gulf during the Tanker war of the late 80s. It's the closes look we have of the Soviet navy in a potential war situation and one that lasts for more than a year. I think the length is important as it shows evolution not just a snapshot.

The Gulf rotation was, mostly, the Pacific fleet, usually the Indian Ocean squadron and the Mediterranean but occasionally the Baltic fleet sent a ship. Offhand I can't recall the Northern Red Banner fleet contributing ships

I love these boards! Thanks to you lot I had to go read some articles.
I would Imagine the larger ships like the Soviet Flat-tops & Kirovs tended to keep their pennant numbers, no?

Hey Alphaco. If you're interested in a little colaboration, I've been doing artwork for 1:285 scale aircraft (in fact, measuring the models and scaling the markings to suit). Like your deck decals, I'm doing actual markings for the real squadrons that flew the type, in some cases down to the reg numbers. I've had some printed already, but as good as the guy was, his ALPS printer was the wrong kind... lots of dithering and jaggies. I've looked at the specs for yours, and think it would do better.

So, if you're interested, let me know. For that matter, if others are interested in buying markings for aircraft (or imaginations) let both of us know...

In previous years I've been a graphic designer and printer, so if you need a hand with artwork, maybe we can work something out. I've included a small sample of what I've done... not to scale obviously but gives an idea of what may be on offer...

Piersyf,

Missed the new post alert and just came back to this thread. Beautiful work! About 50% of the artwork posted is probably beyond any of the Alps printers (will explain further) abilities, the rest can be done. IM me if still interested in collaborating. Again sorry for the long delay in responding to your post.

Don't know if it's possible but I'd love to see some 1/2400 aircraft decals. I've got the IJN meatball covered and have tried to paint the other nations but they look like what they are, painted!

Well I'm willing to give it a try but I think the only thing that will come out ok is the meatball. Will get back to you.
