Here is my updated Micronaut Consolidated Wish List for 2016-2017.
I feel that I must explain the significant changes in this list from the previous year’s list. I have begun purchasing from 3D printers some ships that are currently unavailable in GHQ’s catalog. I have found the 3D-printed ships adequate for my purposes. (Note: adequate, not great; GHQ’s detail is still much better and I would replace any of these with a GHQ product if it were available) However, the 1/2400-scale aircraft are simply not acceptable. The thicknesses of the flight surfaces (wings and tail) are horribly out of scale. By comparison, the metal casting process used by GHQ can produce almost paper-thin surfaces. For this reason, I have selected aircraft packs for all of my first baker’s dozen votes. After that, I am listing another 11 votes for non-aircraft ships.
For all the other Micronaut fans; you are welcome to post your list of favorites for me to compile.
So here's the idea:
- Provide your list of the Micronauts you would most like to see produced in the next season (currently, next is the 2017-2018 season).
- I won’t put a limit on the number of ships on your list, but try to restrict yourself to about a dozen ships. Since the 2008-2009 season, the number of releases scheduled by GHQ has varied from a minimum of only eight in 2009-2010 to a high of thirteen in the 2012-2013 season.
- Provide some support for your choice. Try to convince other customers that they want your choice and GHQ that your choices are good for the company.
- Although most of my choices are from the WW II era, don't feel limited to this time. This just happens to be my favorite era. If you prefer modern, WW I, pre-Dreadnought, or any other era ships, feel free to express your opinion.
- Please feel free to comment on my choices.
My choices are (in alphabetical order of country of origin):
1. WWII France land-based aircraft: Since I selected only in-line types for the French carrier-based aircraft, I will make all my land-based selections radial-engine types. Marcel Bloch MB-150 series single-engine fighter, Potez 630 twin-engine fighter/bomber, Bloch 170 series attack bomber (preferably the post-war Bloch 175T torpedo-armed type), and Sud-Est LeO.450 medium bomber.
2. WWII Germany Aircraft Pack 2 [(Fw 190A/F or Bf 109), Ju 88 (preferably armed as a dive-bomber), He 111 (preferably with torpedo armament), and/or He 177 (preferably with FX 1400 guided bomb or Hs 293 missiles)]: All five types played significant roles in maritime combat. The Germans really need a single-engine fighter. Maybe even both fighter types rather than one of the Heinkel aircraft. If the Bf 109 is selected, it should probably be the Bf 109T version so that Graf Zeppelin can have some fighters (although I like the radial-engine Fw 190s better).
3. WWII Japan late-war carrier-based aircraft: Aichi B7A Ryusei [Grace] attack bomber (open & folded wings), Kawanishi N1K3-A Shiden KAI 2 [George] fighter, Nakajima C6N Saiun [Myrt] reconnaissance aircraft, Yokosuka D4Y3 [Judy] dive bomber (radial-engine version). Although Jill, Val, etc. continued fighting to the end of the war, they were meat on the table for Hellcats and Corsairs. I need some improved Japanese aircraft to make hypothetical late-war battles more evenly balanced. If hypotheticals are allowed, the carrier-based Mitsubishi A7M Reppu [Sam] would have been a good match against late-war US carrier-based fighters.
4. WWII Japan late-war land-based aircraft: Kawasaki Ki-102b [Rudy] twin-engine fighter-bomber (the b version was for low-altitude attack and was intended to carry the Igo-1-B guided missile), Mitsubishi Ki67 Hiryu [Peggy] medium bomber, Nakajima G8N Renzan [Rita] 4-engine heavy bomber, Yokosuka P1Y Ginga [Francis].
5. WWII Soviet aircraft pack 2: Yak-1, 3, 7, or 9 single-engine fighter (especially one of the versions with 37 mm cannon firing through the propeller hub – effective against small water craft), SB-2 twin engine early-war fast bomber, Il-4 twin-engine medium bomber (some versions modified specifically for delivering torpedo attacks, Tu-2 late-war attack bomber.
6. WWII UK attack and medium bombers: Bristol Beaufighter Mk VIC,TF Mk X, or Mk 21; de Havilland Mosquito FB Mk VI or XVIII; Handley-Paige Hampden TB Mk I; Lockheed Hudson. Yes; I know that the Hudson was built in America, but the British used them much more than the Yanks.
7. WWII UK Fleet Air Arm pack: By now, anyone with 1/2400-scale British aircraft has plenty of Swordfish, but none of the other purpose-built aircraft used on carriers. Blackburn Skua, Fairey Fulmar, Fairey Firefly, and Fairey Barracuda would provide some variety on the decks. For land-based designs adapted for carrier use, Gloster Gladiators and Hawker Hurricanes would also be useful in addition to the available Spitfires. All of these aircraft saw significant combat from British carriers. If a Hurricane were available, it would also allow me to put aircraft on Catapult Aircraft Merchant (CAM) ships.
8. WWII UK 1946 carrier-based aircraft: Towards the end of the war, the British depended more on USA-built carrier aircraft than their own designs. If the war had continued another year, however, the Brits would have been introducing their own new generation of carrier-based aircraft. Excluding early jets, here is a list of likely candidates: Blackburn Firebrand/Firecrest attack bomber, de Havilland (Sea) Hornet twin-engine fighter/bomber, Fairey Spearfish attack bomber, and Hawker (Sea) Fury fighter. Pushing the envelope of “1946,†a Westland Wyvern with the Eagle engine would be interesting.
9. WWII USA land-based attack and medium bombers: Douglas A-20 Havoc, Douglas A-236 Invader, North American B-25H or J Mitchell, and Martin B-26 Marauder. The Douglas attack types and the gun-nose Mitchells were very effective in anti-ship operations, especially in the south-west Pacific. The Marauder was used primarily as a medium-altitude level bomber in the European theater, but participated in the Battle of Midway as a torpedo carrier.
10. WWII USA maritime patrol aircraft: Douglas B-18B Bolo, Consolidated PB4Y-2 Privateer, Lockheed PV1 Ventura (or the later PV-2 Harpoon), and Martin PBM Mariner. The B-18B was a conversion of the pre-war medium bomber as an anti-submarine type. It had some limited success in the Caribbean. I prefer the single-tailed PB4Y-2 to the PB4Y-1, which retained the twin tails of their B-24 antecedent. The Ventura and Harpoon were larger examples of the Hudson concept. The Mariner was a more-capable seaplane that never completely replaced the reliable Catalina.
11. WWII USA 1946 carrier-based aircraft: Douglas AD Skyraider, Grumman F7F Tigercat, Grumman F8F Bearcat, Martin AM Mauler. Except for the Mauler, which was delayed for several years, these aircraft missed WWII combat by a matter of months. For a hypothetical replacement, use the two-place Douglas XSB2D-1 Destroyer or Boeing XF8B instead of the Mauler.
12. WWII USA late-war land-based fighters: Bell P-63 King Cobra (much-maligned in the US because of its poor high-altitude capability, it was an effective fighter at low altitude), North American P-51D Mustang (bubble-top version), Northrop P-61 Black Widow (an effective night fighter, some were modified late in the war to include attack capability), Republic P-47 Thunderbolt (definitely a bubble-top version; I’d like the N version with enlarged wings for extended range capability in the Pacific)
13. Since GHQ has not (yet) modeled the (unbuilt) Joffre and the Bearn was incapable of operating modern aircraft, I am placing this at the end of the list of 1/2400-scale aircraft wishes. This is actually the 13th item on this list, and therefore should belong in my second dozen favorites list. I’m putting it here because it is another aircraft pack that I’d like to see.
WWII France carrier-based aircraft: Dewoitine D.790 fighter (navalized version of the D.520, the best French fighter in production at the time of the German invasion), Loire-Nieuport 40 dive bomber (originally built for the Army, but the Army didn’t want dive bombers), Latécoère 299 torpedo bomber (derived from the Laté 298 floatplane), Breguet 690 twin-engine attack bomber (a folding-wing version was proposed but none built). Note that the D.520 and Breguet 690 are already provided on the Bearn (as deck cargo rather than carrier-capable aircraft).
14. WWII France heavy cruiser Duquesne class: One of the early Treaty cruiser designs, these two ships were relatively fast but only lightly armored. During the war, both were refitted in the US, but I would prefer the pre-war configuration. I already have two models from Minifleet, but GHQ’s quality would be much better.
15. WWII Japan heavy cruiser Maya, late-war appearance: This Takao class heavy cruiser was badly damaged at Rabaul. After repairs, the ruined “C†turret had been replaced by two additional twin 5-inch mounts. Although this is a single ship, I think the interest in Japanese cruisers is enough to make this a good choice for GHQ’s production.
16. WWII Japan heavy cruiser Mogami, after 1942 refit. Following damage during the Battle of Midway the two aft main gun mounts were replaced by a large deck for handling float planes. Between that time and her sinking at Suriago Strait in 1944 the anti-aircraft defense was repeatedly reinforced. I would prefer the appearance as sunk, but any of the post-refit modifications would be acceptable.
17. WWII Soviet Union light cruiser Chapayev class. Although none of these ships were completed until after the end of WWII, several were laid down and the incomplete hulls launched before the start of the Soviet involvement.
18. WWII UK light cruisers modified Colony class (Ceylon, Uganda, and Newfoundland). Experience with the first group of Colony-class cruisers showed that replacing the “X†triple 6†mount with medium and light anti-aircraft guns produced a more balanced design. These ships were completed in this configuration. This would also reasonably represent the ships of the first group that were modified after completion.
19. WWII UK light cruiser Delhi, after 1941 refit. The British had this ship modified as an anti-aircraft cruiser using US 5-inch/38 single mounts rather than their standard twin 4†mounts. They were pleased with the results and planned to modify the remainder of the D class in the same way, but after Pearl Harbor the US reserved all the 5-inch mounts for themselves. I would purchase enough to represent the entire class in this conversion.
20. WWII UK light cruisers Scylla and Charybdis: These two ships were nominally part of the Dido class, but because of shortage of the 5.25-inch guns that were to have been their main armament, they each received four twin 4.5-inch anti-aircraft guns instead. Sometimes derided as “toothless,†they proved excellent anti-aircraft escorts and saw significant combat.
21. WWII UK heavy cruiser York. This ship doesn’t get the attention given to her near-cousin Exeter but deserves a good model in Micronaut scale. I can’t find any 1/2400-scale model at all. The difference between Exeter and York is enough that I just can’t accepting using one for the other.
22. WWII USA heavy cruiser Des Moines (CA 134) class. These ships took a step up in size from the Baltimore class and carried semi-automatic gun mounts that almost tripled the rate of fire from that of the Baltimores. Only three were completed, and these after the end of the war. They make for great hypothetical battles. I would probably get at least four to have a uniform squadron.
23. WWII USA heavy cruiser Indianapolis (CA 35) (final configuration) – We are not quite half- way to being able to represent all the US pre-war heavy cruiser types in both early-war & late-war configuration. A late-war Pensacola (CA 24), Chester (CA 27), or Augusta (CA 31) would also be welcome, but Indianapolis gets my vote because of her tragic sinking. No one makes a 1/2400 model of a late-war Indianapolis.
24. WWII USA light cruiser Worcester (CL 144) class. These were classified as “light†cruisers only because of their 6-inch armament. Displacing more than a Baltimore-class heavy cruiser, they carried six twin turrets for dual-purpose 6-inch guns. Like the contemporary Des Moines class, they make for excellent hypothetical battles.
Don S.

My top twelve for the next season with a short explanation:
Top of the list is the WWII USA battleship Idaho (BB-42), late-war appearance with single 5â€/38 guns. A unique ship that adds to the list of the war rebuilt older US battleships.
Next is the WWII France heavy cruiser Duquesne class of two ships that completes the French heavy cruisers (If you modify the CA Foch model for the different foremast and secondary guns of others in the class)
The WWII UK frigate Black Swan class of 13 + 29 modified ships for an additional escort for the Battle of the Atlantic
The WWII UK A & E–I class destroyer leaders (Codrington, Exmouth, Faulkner, Grenville, Hardy, and Inglefield), fills in another pre-war British destroyer
Early Cold War Soviet cruiser Sverdlov (Project 68 bis) class, 30 originally planned, cut to 21 with 14 completed. One ship was rebuilt to an active missile CL and two to active command ships.
WWII USA fast attack transport Charles Lawrence (APD-37) class of 94 DE conversions that add to the amphibious fleet,
Early Cold War USA destroyer Gearing FRAM I conversion of 79 ships to protect the US carriers from the Soviet Sverdlovs
WWII USA light carrier Saipan (CVL-48) class of two ships for battles if the Pacific War had not ended in 1945
WWII UK destroyer “V & W†classes, long-range escort conversions of 21 ships for the Battle of the Atlantic to complement the Wairs (DD AA “V&W†conversions)

Not sure if this has ever made the list, or where it might be on the list but I would like to see the ROK Pohang class. Sure they're small but two dozen were built and the NK sinking of ROKS Cheonan was the closest we've come to reopening the Korean war in the last 40 years.

Well, if you're giving us the chance to submit a whole new set of votes, here's my list. I'm not interested in Nappy or moderns, so 6 each for:
WW1:
Renown class - the last capital ships needed to complete GHQ's WW1 UK line up (they may think there is no more market for these, since their competitor has had a pewter model out for 30 years).
Lord Nelson class - very, very active in the Med and one of the best pre-dreadnoughts
Danae class - first 3 with flush-deck bow - used in WW1 and WW2 (GHQ has the later trawler-bow D class in the WW2 catalog).
Liberte class French PD - The whole WW1 French lineup from GHQ started out well and then fell right through the cracks. This missing class between between Jauregiberry and Danton is the most numerous to a single design before Danton.
Roon class German armoured cruiser - active early in the war (until that oops Yorck had with a German mine) and even then Roon survived the war.
Prinz Adalbert class German armoured cruiser - might as well include the other semi-battleworthy AC class. GHQ produced all the British armoured cruisers, but they have nobody to fight.
WW2:
Duquesne French CA class - might as well complete the French CA's
Strasbourg French BC - different enough to make it worth a separate model (after all they did Gneisnau)
York - UK CA - again a one-off different enough from the available other ship in the class.
WWII UK destroyer War Emergency classes “Sâ€, “Tâ€, “Uâ€, “Vâ€, and “W†(to copy from your previous list)
WWII UK “A†& “E†– “I†class destroyer leaders (Codrington, Exmouth, Faulkner, Grenville, Hardy, and Inglefield) (another copy)
WWII Germany Schnellboote (E-boats), S-100 type (last one and last copy)

Based on several suggestions I have received (and my personal opinion), I have returned WWII Germany battlecruiser Gneiseneau to the wish list, but as intended rebuild with lengthened hull and 15-inch guns. I have assigned it 16 votes, half that that the ship had before GHQ announced GEN24 would be Gneiseneau. After receiving my order, I have determined that this is definitely the pre-1943 version.

Early Cold War USA aircraft carrier Midway (CV 41) class, SCB-110 (angled deck) reconstruction
Early Cold War Soviet cruiser Sverdlov (Project 68 bis) class
Early Cold War USA destroyer Gearing, FRAM I conversion
Post-Cold War USN aircraft (CH-53K King Stallion, EA-18G Growler, FA-18E/F Super Hornet, F-35C Lightning II, P-8 Poseidon)
Early Cold War USA aircraft carrier Midway (CV 41) class, SCB-110 (angled deck) reconstruction
I would vote for all the above. The Midway I'd vote highest . :O)
Would also love to see the Forrestal Class eventually. Especially since ALNVACO it out of stock on it and no idea when it will be filled.
Plus Vietnam era aircraft. I have a couple packs of them from Viking but love GHQ's airplanes.

Post-Cold War China amphibious transport dock Kunlunshan (Luzhao) (Type 071) class -- 4 ships in active service and together with Type 072A will make a good representation of modern PLAN amphibious task force.
Post-Cold War China corvette Jiangdao (Type 056) class -- with > 36 active ships of this class, one is going to always find their existence in possible conflicts in East China and South China Sea. Huge orders for GHQ if people such as myself is going to collect at one to one scale.
Post-Cold War China fast combat support Hulunlake (Type 901) class -- GHQ hasn't been making support ships for any nation. Maybe that's due to lack of playability with game rules. Yet I would still list this as my wished collectable item to pair with Liaoning carrier.
Post-Cold War China destroyer (Renhai) (Type 055) -- The first ship of this >10000 ton class destroyer was just launched and should be in service soon as capital ships for PLAN. I am putting my coins on the table as a wish item, hope that it can find it's place on the catalogue one day.
USA destroyer Kidd (DDG 993 class) -- 4 of this class are important ships to add for Taiwan Strait conflicts
ROK Pohang class -- great piece for Korean water battle
