Message from Photobucket

Post by Nazgul »

Has anyone else received an email from Photobucket stating they were violating their clause about 3rd party use of their pictures, mainly on forums? They want me to upgrade (pay) for the service.

Sorry, I haven't posted for a while. Sadly I have departed from microarmor because of health reasons, namely occasional palsy and losing vision in my left eye (sucks when you loose stereoscopic vision). I'm keeping what I have made and still play solo.

Good luck guys and gals. Cry havoc and let slip the hounds of micro armor War!

Photobucket wants money... $399 a year for anyone to use their site for 3rd-party linking. This has been brought up all over the Internet for weeks now:

https://www.google.com/search?site=&sou ... e2JdSyH2B0

Basically, it looks like they are trying harder to put themselves out of business by loosing customers...

Hey Nazgul - good to see you on the forum! Sorry to hear about your health, that's got to be incredibly tough. Your scratch built creations are still inspirational to me, hope you hang on to them!! Take care brother.

Yes it is a bit of a pain.
I lost a hard drive once so I have quite a lot of photos that are only left on PB.
Without an easy way to transfer them back to your own pc (without a hotlink) its almost seems like extortion!
I believe it is a problem for a lot of folk in small business.

If you have a Photobucket account and don't want to pay the money for third party linking, delete your account. If you leave it there they can claim you as a user for marketing. Dump them and they slide down the user rankings.

This is why I don't use these services or even the Cloud. They can change their conditions and prices at will and you are held hostage. A portable terabyte hard drive is cheaper and your storage is yours to use as you want. If you use any kind of Cloud service, back your stuff up on your own home hard drive.

They certainly took all the fun out of browsing the "Show us your stuff" thread. It's a shame because that thread was always a great source of inspiration and ideas.

Sorry guys. Due to Photobucket's antics I will be killing the account and deleting the files. If they are still available please grab what photos you want for reference. I plan to pull the plug Friday night.

As for the physical stuff....no sympathy necessary. Its been a good run and at best I still have a few years to be a pain in the buttocks. Don't plan to slow down and at 59 run full tilt working in the local ER.

Historicon is on my bucket list so don't be surprised if I don't show up and drop a box of Rattes on the table (hopefully next year) :)

Take it easy and be sure to share what you know with the gang on the forums.

Well surely between us we can work a way to get our images back up?

Would the system here allow us to link back to the Six mm facebook pages? That might be a simple turnaround - it is a pain for those without social media; but I suppose we simply have to adapt to some extent :/

I was starting to hate photobucket for a while now so this helps me move from them… Crazy what they are doing… but if you want to download your albums quickly for file preservation, I listed the instructions below on how to do that if it helps.

Log into PB and select ‘Library’ on the left side of the top ribbon.

Image

Along the left column of the screen, select the library you want to view or drill into…

Image

Once in the album, select the hyperlink to ‘Download album’

Image

The website will tell you it is preparing the album for download and to wait… once the album (zip file) is prepared, then you click on the link and download that entire album to your desktop or where ever you want it stored. I chose the desktop because it was the easiest spot to locate for when I uploaded all those photos to Flickr.

Or… if you do not have time… once the album is prepared, PB will email you and state that the album is ready to download and here is the link to download it. Larger albums take longer obviously… but should not be longer than 3-5 minutes…

I hope that helps.

Received my email from Photobucket last Friday and all links to my pictures were severed almost immediately.

So I've created a Flickr account and have linked some posts to that.

Going to take a while to go through my posts and find the photos.

Wish there was a search facility in the GHQ forum to 'find my picture posts'?

Downloaded most of my pics now. Got the email from PB.
Just wonder how long before the PB ones die off.

As of today still linking.

Agreed, how long before they become extinct?

Seems quite a few websites are affected that i frequent. Car forums, modelling forums, mini forums... hosting pics takes a hit.

Frustrating when you research something and the pics are gone.

I have to say, this did prompt the family to move off third party services. We own a domain name for our email. It was pretty cheap to add web hosting and install an off the shelf photo hosting program. Now we are moving all our photos to our own server. The album software may go pfffttt some day but all our photos will be on a server under our control.

We're paying $7/month to host with BlueHost.com and are sharing it with several branches of the family.
