Reading a book 30 +/- years ago. U-47 went through an area where WW1 German ships were scuttled as a barrier. I Don’t recall his exit.
The Brits then put rocks, sand, etc so the only ship entry-exit was the harbor entrance.

On US Army posts, the end of the duty day is marked by the lowering of the flag. Two bugle calls are sounded immediately prior and as the flag is lowered. What are they and in what order are they played? What is required of all personnel within earshot at this time, including those driving cars?

PzG: The only other bugle call that makes any sense is Attention. I may have heard it, but don't recall. On the posts that I have been on, I don't remember hearing it and at the sound of Retreat, people went to parade rest, then at the first not of To the Colors, they came to attention and saluted.

In any event, you said what two bugle calls are playe.

Chris. The National Anthem is not a bugle call. Hanscom AFB is not an amy post. On army. The Anthem is usually played only at certain events by the band, such as ceremonies for changes of command, parades, and some other events. I've never heard it at the end of the day.

The end of the duty day is customarily 1700hrs (5pm). Retreat is sounded by bugle over loudspeakers. Individuals pause, formations and training parties are called to attention, then put at Parade Rest. Cars in the road pull to the roadside and only the driver gets out of the car and stands by the door. All face either the source of the music or, if known, in the direction of the post headquarters flag. As the notes of Retreat fade, the bugle sounds To the Colors, at which point formations and parties are called to Attention by the senior person present, who salutes or presents arms. Individuals come to Attention and salute. The flag is lowered slowly, timed so that a member of the color guard grasps the fly as The last nite sounds. At that point, the ceremony is ended, salutes are dropped, and all proceed about their business.

The practice of stopping cars to render honors was discontinued officially in the late 70s or early 80s, although some continue ut, especially when in vicinity of the post flag.

Tattoo and Taps are sounded later in the evening. Look 'em if you want to know what instructions they signal.

On a military post, bugle calls are sounded at prescribed intervals to regulate the day or transmit instructions. In most cases, they are sounded today solely for tradition, with a few exceptions, like Retreat.
