Re: Bills stuff
So very tempting to restart ACW with great pics as those - haven't collected since the late 80's with Heroics&Ros...
Which rules are you going to use?

Thanks a lot Greg. I’ve always used Fire & Fury brigade level, I still use the first edition, one of these days, I’ll get around to buying the second edition.

That is a great little vignette there, Bill! Putting all your extremely well painted troops together on the table top shows them off to maximum effect. Well done.
Have you ever tried the Civil War rules by GHQ? I have these but have not really done anything with them yet. My Civil War gaming so far has been playing in other people's games and using some version of Johnny Reb.

Thanks a lot Pete. I do have Micro Force, and do have every intention of trying one of these days, I’ve gone as far as to read through them. I just like the aspect of fighting larger Corps and Army sized battles, and Micro Force is spun towards Brigade and maybe Division sized action, which has plenty of potential to be fun.

Re: Bills stuff
Hi Bill! I do know that the Micro Force rules are for smaller type actions. Ultimately, whatever rules I may decide to go with, I would hope that the basing I use can be used for other rules sets. If I start painting my 10mm Civil War figures one of these days, I would hope I could base them only once and just use them with several different rules sets. I say this, because I have not done enough research to decide what rules set to use.

Re: Bills stuff
I feel your pain on looking for the right rule set to only base once, I’m going through the same thing with Napoleonics, Crispy showed me a good set, but I’m still shopping around. The only stand sizes that are comparable between Micro Force and Fire & Fury are infantry. Cavalry is really close, but Micro Force artillery and limber stands are significantly deeper, by almost three inches. Micro Force also requires separate officer stands. When I finish my Gettysburg armies project, I certainly won’t be done painting ACW, so I’ll probably branch into regimental and build smaller more detailed forces. I also want to make some museum type dioramas, starting with the Irish Brigade at Fredericksburg.

Thanks, Bill! There are certainly many "rabbit holes" you can go down here. One of the things I will need to decide is whether to create specific units or just create mix and match generic units or maybe even a combination of both. For WWII, my approach has been more generic overall in that I generally don't try to create a specific unit but the minis can represent any unit I choose. While one might say, that doesn't look exactly like 6th Panzer or 5th Guards Tank, I try to have the right equipment at least or at least reasonably close.

Re: Bills stuff
So most of my ACW are generic, because I play in brigade scale, but there are some little touches I add to add some flavor.
Like if a specific brigade had Zouaves, I’ll research to figure out what type of Zouave uniform they wore, and what colors were on it. Then I mark the bottom of the stand what brigade they go with so if they are removed as casualties, I remember to put them back in the right brigade when I clean up. Sometimes you have units like the Iron Brigade that wore Hardee hats. I do put some serious effort into trying to make no two Confederates the same. I kind of pay a little attention to artillery, the Union had better artillery, so they get more 3” rifles, Parrots, and only a few Napoleons. The Reb artillery was more ad hoc, so I tend to give them more Napoleons and howitzers and maybe a few Parrots. Basically that whole paragraph means the majority of my stands can go in any brigade in any division.

That would probably be my general approach as well, Bill. I actually have all the GHQ Zouave types so then it would be doing the research to figure out which units had them and the basic uniform of each.

Re: Bills stuff
I’m getting ready to start Alexander Webb’s Philadelphia Brigade, the 72nd Pennsylvania were Zouaves, and so were the 69th Pennsylvania, but most of the 69th’s Zouave uniforms were ruined on the Peninsula the year before and weren’t replaced, so I’m debating painting them, but the 69th was unique from other Zouaves, the had sky blue pants, dark blue kepi’s, and green trim on their jackets, so I might add one stand.

Welp, finished Col. John Brooke's brigade.
And that finishes Brigadier General John Caldwell's First Division, Second Corps, Army of the Potomac. Four brigades of Col Edward Cross, Col Patrick Kelly's Irish Brigade, Brigadier General Samuel Zook, and Col John Brooke.
It's one of the smallest divisions in the Army by the time of Gettysburg, but the Second Corps was also one of the oldest, and this particular Division took a pounding six months prior in front of the stone wall at Fredericksburg.

Those look excellent, Bill! I like how each stand is not just a group of figures all posed exactly alike. Individual figures stand out but combine together well to give the unit it's own unique character.
