For the curious - current German artillery

Post by panzergator »

The current German artillery battalion consists three batteries of 9 self-propelled 155mm (Panzerhaubitz2000) each. In videos, I usually see two Fuchs and 2 Boxer medics with a battery. On exercises, 3-gun platoons maneuver separately with a Fuchs and maybe a Fennek. Sometimes a support truck or Feldjager (MP) wheeled vehicle is in the convoy.

I have seen a train that included a gun battery of six, plus six MLRS (M270), accompanied by an M113 artillery track. The jury is still out on how the missile batteries are organized. Still looking. Fuchs and Boxers play command, FDC, and medic roles, with Boxer command and medic vehicles having a slightly raised roof. Hopefully, we will see GHQ bring along more Boxer variants. The Brits are equipping mechanized infantry battalions with 76 Boxers of different types. Several other countries are adopting Boxer.

A side note - Brits distinguish between "armoured infantry," equipped with Warrior, and "mechanized infantry," equipped with Boxer, formerly AT105 Saxon. Last I read, the Warrior will not be upgraded before it is phased out, to be replaced by either ARIES or Boxer. Given their fiscal restraints, likely it will be Boxer, but they are, for a country with only 3 active armoured regiments (battalion equivalent), treating the Russians with surprising truculence. They may NEED a new tracked IFV.

Both Bits and Germans are considering replacing their tracked SPs with trucks mounted guns. The German piece is RCH155, an 8-wheeled vehicle along the lines of the French Caesar or the Dana. Some may be seen on YouTube vids of German artillery maneuvers.

My resources are limited. If you know differently regarding what I've posted, please provide corrections.I see a LOT of new equipment out there on YouTube videos.

Guess I'm just uncomfortable with 9 guns per battery, so I'm still looking for info. It impacts my collection, so I'd like to get it right.
