Thank you for the info Don! I didn't realize it was that much larger than the Arleigh Burkes. I'm going to do a little research on some ships from both Navies and probably request some for the Consolidated Micronaut Wish List!

Remember the Korean War never ended all parties are technically still at war.
There is only an armistice.

It’s an eye opener, I lived through a few on the DMZ but knew little about the Naval war fought mostly by South Korea.

As my primary interest is military ships in the first half of the 20th century, I am not really interested in car ferrys, liners, and cargo ships, except those used for amphibious attack or front-line resupply. Having said this, if you want to identify specific ships or classes of ships, I will gladly add them to the Consolidated Micronaut Wish List.

Naval ships need both things to protect in war, and targets!

The Sejong the Great class is generally similar to the Arleigh Burke class but with differences that are clear to someone with an interest in modern naval warships. The Sejong the Great class is about 10% larger (in length and breadth), has a larger vertical launch array, and has a permanent helicopter hanger. Also, there are differences in the light anti-aircraft armament and some of the electronics antenna. Overall, an Arleigh Burke is the closest approximation, but I think it would be good for GHQ to produce a specific model of this class of ships.

Here is my Micronaut Consolidated Wish List for 2024-2025. My choices are (in alphabetical order of country of origin):

• WWII France torpedo boat La Melpomene-class: This class of miniature destroyers was intended for escort work in the Mediterranean. They turned out overweight, lacking in stability, and unsuited for open-ocean work. They were fast, however, and several of them had interesting careers. There are numerous other small ships of similar characteristics that I would like modeled (for example, see Italian Spica-class below).

• WWII France destroyer Vauquelin-class: GHQ’s FRN5 is labeled as Vauquelin, but I believe the arrangement of the torpedoes and the shape of the stern is that of the preceding Aigle class. There are several classes of WWII-era French destroyers yet to be modeled by GHQ; any of the following would be welcome: Mogador, Guepard, Chacal, L’Adroit, and Bourrasque.

• WWII Germany amphibious craft: Germany had a variety of small and medium-sized amphibious craft such as F-lighters, Marinefährprahm, Siebel ferry, etc. These were used in the Mediterranean, Black Sea and other coastal combat areas. I would like something similar to USN54, Landing Assault Craft, or USN55, Landing Support Craft, with a variety of types in a package.

• WWII Germany Aircraft Pack 2: First of all, a single-engined fighter (Fw 190A/F or Bf 109T). Then, some bomber types: Ju 88 or Ju 188 (preferably armed as a dive-bomber), He 111 (preferably with torpedo armament), He 115 floatplane, and/or He 177 (preferably with FX 1400 guided bomb or Hs 293 missiles)]: All six types played significant roles in maritime combat. The Germans really need a single-engine fighter. Maybe even both fighter types rather than one of the Heinkel aircraft.

• WWII Germany torpedo boat 1939 Type (T22 – T36). Closer to an escort destroyer (i.e., British Hunt class) than earlier German torpedo boats, a relatively large number of these were built during the war and saw wide use.

• WWI Italy light cruiser Bixio-class or Quarto: Either of these would give the Italians a scouting force to go along with its heavier forces. The Pisa-class cruiser that GHQ produced for the 2018-2019 season is an armored cruiser rather than a light cruiser.

• WWI Italy battleship Dante Alighieri: This one-of-a-kind battleship carried heavy armament and had a high speed at the expense of relatively light armor. I would like to have it both because of its unusual appearance and to complete the Italian WWI battle fleet.

• WWII Italy destroyer Folgore-class: This class of four destroyers and the similar Freccia-class saw extensive service as escorts in the Mediterranean. Less than satisfactory because of mechanical unreliability, these ships still deserve to have a good model in 1/2400 scale. CinC makes a model for the Freccia class, but GHQ would be better.

• WWII Italy torpedo boat Spica-class: These were good-looking ships with high speed but let down by the armament scheme. Their gun and torpedo armament was ineffective against full-size destroyers and left insufficient capacity for defensive weapons. They would have been much better escorts with more anti-submarine and anti-air capability. I would like more of these smaller warships available.

• WWII Japan late-war Navy aircraft: Aichi B7A Ryusei [Grace], Kawanishi N1K Shiden [George], Mitsubishi A7M Reppu [Sam], Yokosuka D4Y3 [Judy] (radial version), Yokosuka P1Y Ginga [Frances]. Although Jill, Val, etc. continued fighting to the end of the war, they were meat on the table for Hellcats and Corsairs. Improved Japanese aircraft make hypothetical late-war battles more evenly balanced. I was disappointed that GHQ did not include any of these when they released IJN58, CV Unryu. In comparison, GHQ includes biplane fighters, dive bombers, and torpedo bombers in their issue of USS Langley.

• WWII Japan heavy cruiser Maya, late-war appearance: This Takao class heavy cruiser was badly damaged at Rabaul. After repairs, the ruined “C” turret had been replaced by two additional twin 5-inch mounts. Although this is a single ship, I think the interest in Japanese cruisers is enough to make this a good choice for GHQ’s production.

• WWII Japan destroyer Mutsuki class, fast transport conversion: This was the last of the Japanese destroyer classes before the introduction of the revolutionary “Special Type” Fubuki. Considered obsolescent by 1940, they were converted into fast transports, most of which were sunk during the Solomons Campaign. This is the configuration that I would prefer.

• WWII Japan destroyer Shimakaze: This was only a single ship but many more were planned. This was a particularly fast and powerful design for a classic destroyer. Later in the war, the main gun armament was reduced to provide additional anti-aircraft protection. I would prefer the original appearance.

• WWI UK battlecruiser Renown-class: This was the last class of battlecruisers completed during the Great War. Repulse saw combat in the First World War when she participated in the Second Battle of Heligoland Bight. Although CinC makes a model of this class, GHQ’s would be better

• WWII UK aircraft Fleet Air Arm pack: By now, anyone with 1/2400-scale British aircraft has plenty of Swordfish, but none of the other purpose-built aircraft used on carriers. Blackburn Skua, Fairey Fulmar, Fairey Firefly, and Fairey Barracuda would provide some variety on the decks. For land-based designs adapted for carrier use, Gloster Gladiators and Hawker Hurricanes would also be useful in addition to the available Spitfires. All of these aircraft saw significant combat from British carriers. If a Hurricane were available, it would also allow me to put aircraft on Catapult Armed Merchant Ships (CAMSs).

• WWII UK destroyers ‘V & W’ long-range escort conversions. These ships underwent significant conversion from obsolescent destroyers into effective anti-submarine escorts. The extent of the conversion makes it impractical to change GHQ’s UKN43 into this appearance. GHQ has already produced the unconverted version and the even more extensively converted anti-aircraft WAIR version. I would like them to continue with this and later the fast (short-range) escort version.

• WWII UK destroyers Battle-class (group 1). These late-war destroyers were built with early war lessons in mind and with the intention of using them in the Pacific Ocean. They had an unusual appearance, with the main gun armament all forward and multiple medium and light antiaircraft guns aft of the bridge.

• WWII UK cruisers modified Colony-class. Late in the war, Bermuda, Jamaica, Mauritius, and Kenya had ‘X’ turret removed and replaced with light and medium anti-aircraft weapons. Ceylon, Newfoundland, and Uganda were completed with only three triple 6-inch mounts. The medium AA varied between 2-pdr pompom mounts and 40mm Bofors. For purpose of common ammunition supply, I would prefer a version with all 2-pdr mount.

• WWII USA aircraft: land-based attack and medium bombers: The Douglas A-20 Havoc and its late-war replacement, the A-26 Invader, were high-powered attack types. GHQ already makes a B-25B (with USS Hornet and in the land-based bomber set), but I would like to have a later-model North American B-25H or J for low-level anti-shipping strikes. These were visually different from the earlier models. Although the Martin B-26 Marauder was used mostly for medium-altitude level bombing in Europe, they participated in the Battle of Midway as torpedo bombers.

• WWII USA auxiliary ships: Just before and during WWII the USA constructed several purpose-built auxiliary ships on a common hull design. These included the Dixie (AD 14)-class destroyer tenders [5 in class], the Fulton (AS 11)-class submarine tenders [4 in class], and the Vulcan (AR 5)-class repair ships [7 in class]. Although the classes were not identical, they were similar in carrying significant self-defense armament so that they could serve in advanced bases.

• WWII USA destroyer, Fletcher-class, late-war anti-aircraft modification (forward bank of torpedo tubes removed, 2 quad 40 mm Bofors added, 7x1 20mm replaced with 6x2 20mm. By this stage of the war, opportunities for large scale torpedo launchings were much less likely than having to defend against heavy Kamikaze attacks.

• WWII US heavy cruiser Indianapolis (CA 35) (final configuration) – US cruisers went through a multitude of refurbishments during the war, usually to increase anti-aircraft capability and reduce the resulting top weight. For example, the Pensacola (CA 24) as built differs from the early-war appearance (as modeled by GHQ’s USN40), which is different from the mid-war appearance, which is different from the late-war appearance. Chester (CA 27), Augusta (CA 31), or New Orleans (CA 32) would also be welcome, but Indianapolis gets my vote because of her tragic sinking.

• WWII US heavy cruiser Oregon City (CA 122)-class: These were modifications of the Baltimore-class with reduced superstructure to provide better sky arcs for the anti-aircraft guns. Their single funnels gave them a distinctly different appearance from the Baltimores. They were completed too late to see combat in WWII.

• To go along with the Oregon City class, I’d like to see the corresponding modification of the Cleveland-class – the Fargo (CL 106)-class.
