Those Scarabs look very nice, Chris! I have 3 of them at home, still unpainted, but not sure how to use them in a game except as a target or an objective.

Hey guys, I need some help with Soviet / Russian units. I want to build a tank regiment, and a motor rifle regiment from the 1990s timeframe and I am using FM 100-2-3 (The Soviet Army, dated June 1991) as my guide.

What I currently need help with are battalion command posts. From looking at the tables, it appears to me that a tank battalion has 2 x BTRs for a command post, and a motor rifle battalion has 3 x BTRs.

Can anyone confirm or deny this?

And if confirmed, does anyone know how the CP was set up? Were they specially modified BTRs? Did they park them next to each other and throw a tent extension up, like the US does with M577s? I haven’t been able to find any pics online of a Soviet battalion CP in the field.

Great question - after digging through multiple resources, both old and new, it appears that Soviet Battalion HQs are divided into Forward, Main and Rear CPs. The forward CP is the battalion Commander in a command tank in tank battalions, an APC in motor rifle battalions, both usually also have a Gaz 69 or similar.

The Main CP consists of a command APC, with the chief of staff, operations officer, signal officer, political officer and NBC officer. Some units may have a second APC or BRDM as well.

The Rear CP has an APC with the technical deputy commander which is normally co-located with the supply and maintenance platoon.

This is from David Isby's "Weapons and Tactics of the Soviet Army." It is a little dated from 1981 but I doubt the command structure at battalion level has changed that significantly.

Upper right quadrant AOE Div 86 J series Div Cav troop, before they decided to put the tanks back in.

Lower right quadrant below the M106 Mortars, the CFVs for the battalion scout platoon (3) and (7) for a Cav troop from an Armored Brigade Combat Team Cavalry Squadron. The hmmvs are still on the paint rack waiting for 3 tone camo.



Left 1/2 2 tank companies with HQ and support.



All of this can be organized into one of the combined arms battalions in the ABCT with 2 tank cos. and 2 mech cos.
