Sorry I forgot to mention what I use for the magnet base for the boxes.
At Office Max or Office Depot you can purchase magnetic business card holders that are almost a perfect fit for the boxes you see in the post above (both the green and the white). It takes two and a half to fill the box, but you don't always need all for the space filled. I usually put just two, but it will depend on how much magnet space you need...

For the magnetic sheeting, I use magnetic sheets designed to be placed over heater/air condition vents when not in use. It comes 4-6 (large) sheets to a pack, and costs about $5. Its available at Home Depot and Lowes. While not as strong as a thicker magnetic sheet, it is cheap and easy to work with.
I also know guys who use the material that the signs you can stick to the side of a car are made from. Its big magnetic sheets, with a very strong magnetic "pull," and can be purchased from a sign-making store. I don't know how much it costs; as it is not something the store generally sells individually, I think they acquire it by walking in and asking, "how much?"

Here is the first rebased German Panzer Company for our campaign. I've used a numbering system similar to what the Germans used for aesthetic reasons.
Since this picture was taken I have modified the tag a little but the modification doesn't change the general layout.

I use Corel for my graphics, but I would imagine you can do the same on any graphic program.
