Google Earth is free and a wonderful tool for building maps. Below is my next battlefield project that I'm working on. On the left side of the image you'll notice a yellow line with two red dots on the ends. This is the Google Earth measurement tool. At the bottom of the image you see the readout for the distance represented by the line (in this case a hair over 3,000m). I added the grid and notations in a graphics package. The grid represents my 4' x 6' table. Each 4" x 4" square on the grid is 250m x 250m (which is the scale I use in my rules). Thus the total area represented is 3000m x 4500m. The other images are simply detail views to guide my modeling efforts. My goal is to use this tool to make battlefields as nice as Mark Luther's!
I'm constructing a historical portion of Omaha Beach, the Vierville Draw Beach exit. I'm currently delayed by a lack of accurate photos of the area. I recently purchased a book that has lost "After the Battle" photos. Which as a photo of my area, but the resolution is off, so it is hard to decide how to proceed. I hope to post some photo soon!
My plan was to have one person command the german defenses. While other individuals would each command a LCP and its compliment of troops/equipment/vehicles; and possible another command the DD tanks that were allocated to come ashore in this area.
I have accurate information about the order of battle, and each of the progressive waves of troops and equipment coming ashore.
My diorama has been in construction for over a year, with moving and weather delays, but construction has resumed.
