Well I played a game of MicroFlames (my hybrid name for Micro armor with FoW) on Wednesday night and it was a blast. Using the 2nd Ed rules, we played a simple meeting engagement, my company of early panthers against an American armor company. The game went just like a regular flames of war game. After a turn or so, you really do forget you're using tiny models until you pick up a Battlefront stuart after and it looks like a cruise ship

Basically he used his m5a1's to close in while his shermans and wolverines carefully plotted their way around the small hills which now hid our models splendidly from one another. We started slugging it out up close, but neither of us could pass firepower tests, conversely we had no problems passing morale tests so we were able to stick around to keep the fight up.

I am playing another match Wednesday and will bring a camera to take photos and will post them along with the AAR. The one drawback is right now none of my local opponents have infantry based for flames of war, so for the first month or so, it's going to be armor only engagements. I have ordered a bunch of infantry from GHQ to model like a flames infantry team.

I really think there is a lot of potential here and as such I have created a group on Yahoo:

My wife wants to move to Iowa (Cedar Rapids) so I might be close(r) to you guys next year.

If you are interested in moving up to more advanced micro armor rules some time, let me know.

We have a loose collection of Bay Area guys who get together for wargaming from time to time. Some from the South Bay, I'm in the East Bay, and we even have a couple guys from Vacaville and Sacramento that join us. Most of us are fairly hard-core military history buffs, who know each other through our interests in all things related to tanks.

We played with Mobius' PanzerWar rules for about two years. We are not working with ODGW's Mein Panzer rules. If you are interested, I'll give you a ping next time we try to get together.

What are you talking about?? My wife says it's not that windy at all. Now don't bother me because I am busy building a flat table for the back porch where she says I can keep ALL my gaming equipment from May through July. I thought she would want it in the cellar, but she insists that I keep it in the backyard in an open area where passersby might be able to see it and want to play. What a special gal!!

We played many games with his rules. I like them. My views have been expressed many times before in these threads, so I'll not bore you all with yet another retelling. My own conclusions are that Mobius' rules are about the best I've seen of the optimized for technical detail genre. I would also suggest they are more suited to experienced gamers than first-timers, and work best with a company of troops or less per player.

And he offers his rules for free. Boy, ya can't beat that deal! Whataguy!

Looking over these rules, it reminds me an aweful lot of a game I played at ConQuestSF with 1/285 minis. It was my first time playing with micro armor actually and I won a $10 GHQ gift certificate. Do you go to ConQuest or The Shield?

I can't wait to print out the rules PDF at work for panzer war. Do you know Carey Erickson?

Whoa. Who's game WAS that? What was the scenario? What did you get the certificate for?

Does this look familiar? My Kursk/Prokhorovka scenario from Conquest a year ago. Played it with Mobius' rules. I gave away a gift certificate for "most herioc unit" to the German commander who blew the bridge near the top of the table.

LOL....yes It looks very familiar. I can see my right forearm and knee in the picture. I AM THE COMMANDER YOU GAVE THE CERTIFICATE TO!! Small world!! I had so much fun at this battle. I will never forget the sustenance that bucket of Red Vines provided. It was really my introduction to GHQ-1/285 scale world. I told anyone that would listen your battle at CQ '05 was exactly what I hoped to get out of miniature gaming how much fun I had with the micro stuff and the rules sets. The communicating with subordinates and peers in the org was awesome stuff man. I really had a blast.

At the Littlefield Tank Museum on March 19th. I was there as well. Eric Lee gave me an invite. My buddy Dave and I were at that but we had to cut out before the beer for a FoW megabattle.

Why didn't you do ConQuest '06? I was looking forward to it. I did manage to play 'Paras on the Orne' which Glen Holland ran using the jagdpanzer rules and GHQ stuff at the con with Chris and Ryan, the 2 youngsters who are seated to my right above. After that battle that night (or rather morning...we didn't finish at 1:30am like we did with your's [which was what I wanted] but it was still late) I came home, unearthed the gift certificate and the GHQ catalog from the game you ran and swore allegiance to GHQ and 1/285.

Anyways, nice catching up with you again and can you send me a link to the Mein Panzer rules? Anytime you guys are going to play let me know and I will be there. I agree these rules aren't really for the beginner, but after a couple times I should be up to speed.

Glad to hear that you enjoyed it.

We do like to have a certain "feel" to our games. That con game was pretty close along the lines of how we play when we just get together, except that it was a little larger (too large for Panzer-War, in my mind) and a little more complete in the scenario briefing materials.
