Civilian Vehicles

Hello All!

Outside of GHQ's "Technicals" are there any other vehicles that would be appropriate for use as civilian vehicles in modern Third World countries?

This page has links to many pictures of Heroics/Ros and Scotia vehicles. Some of which make good civilian vehicles. Keep in mind that they are 1/300th scale. So they are a little smaller that GHQ or CinC miniatures.

Yes, thank you! Looks like JTT has the most complete selection of civilian vehicles including buses, trucks, vans, sedans, etc. Their 1/32 vehicles appear to be a wee bit smaller than GHQ but it should be close enough since these are intended strictly to add "color" to the landscape. Nothing says "moderns" like cars, telephone poles, and parking lots!

Walthers has quite a selection in 1/220 scale (Z) in their catalogue. You can get a glimpse of quite a few of these on our web site. They come prepainted, which costs more, but they are pretty good examples of modern vehicles. They primarily have European vehicles including containers, fire and ambulance, police, etc...

I have managed to kit-bash together quite a variety of civvie vehicles for modern battles.

Now, several of the vehicles shown are off-brand, rather than GHQ. But then several are indeed GHQ. For years, whenever I bought a pack or two of trucks or light utility vehicles, I would pick one or two out and "civvie them up".

If you look closely you'll see several WW2 Soviet GAZ trucks, some British Bedfords, and some heavily bashed-up jeeps. There is a British command truck puttied-up to look like an Isreali Egged Bus, and a Soviet Stalinets tracktor showing as a civilian bulldozer. There are even two BA-10 armored cars, without their turrets, with one set of rear axles removed, and with heavy doses of putty, one masquerading as an SUV in the round-a-bout (blue with white top), the other as a van just leaving the round-a-bout (red with white top).

There are also a variety of modern vehicles, including Soviet UAZ command cars and vans, GAZ-66 and ZiL-131medium trucks, one French TRM 1000 heavy truck, and some US Army Chevy pick-up trucks.

It isn't that hard to do. Start with some light or medium trucks, and put some stuff in the open bed, and paint 'em in civvie colors. After you've done a few, you'll want to add some putty here or there to give some more variety.

Granted, I'm not ready to do an "evacuate the metropolis at rush hour" scenario, but I have managed a fair enough collection to add some color to modern battles.

I think it would be nice if GHQ put out a variety pack of civilian vehicles. I would like to see a WWII pack, a 50s & 60s pack, and a "modern" pack. I know this might not be cost effective, but it would be nice...

The Microform models civilian vehicles I would classify as only "okay" nothing spectacular there. What I did find interesting and useful was their line of 1/2400 scale buildings, trains and airliners. They were super friendly on the phone and I asked them if they were going to expand their line but they're mainly an architectural model supplier. Their models are meant to make building models look more realistic without drawing attention away from the building model itself so the lineup will probably not change much.

I just picked up some Z-Scale vehicles from Marklin that are pretty cool. I got three Mercedes sedans, three BMW sedans, three VW hatchbacks and three Opel Station wagons. At 1/220 they are a little large but I think they'll work okay. Pictures soon!

I just purchase a package of 1/300 scale civilian vehicles today at gamestorm.

The quality of the catings are on the par of scotia and are a tad small sitting next to my GHQ trucks, but the bus is nice and the smaller bus with a little work can be turned into a RV. It would if they would have included a delivery truck. Also my pack had a spru of 2 small turrents, which i believe are for the trucks.

Here's an update:

Microform Models, which I previously described, has infact extended / updated their line. They now have new models for compact, mid-size, full-size sedans, Mini-Van, SUV, small and large pick-up trucks. These are in 1/20" architectural scale which is 1/240 model scale. Pprices range from $.53 for the compact car to $.63 for the SUV. I've ordered a set and will post pictures when they arrive. The website picture looks better than the previous models I purchased in terms of detailing, we'll see about scale issues. At least they should work with the 8mm infantry.

Here's an update. I received the new microform models vehicles in the mail today - first impression is that they are much better than the previous vehicles. They look more like a modern SUV, Minivan, pickup truck etc. When I get home tonight I'll post some pictures next to a humvee or something for scale. More to follow.

Okay, I promised pictures and here they are sorry it has taken so long to get around to it. Again these are the latest offerings from Microform Models (Google search will get you right there) for archetectural puposes not for gaming but the quality is getting better and they're pretty cheep. I think the per item price is between $.55 and $.75, lower than GHQ at any rate.

The first is a minivan next to a GHQ two door Humvee for comparison.

This is the Jeep Cherokee style SUV.

This is the King Cab style pick-up truck.

This is the regular pick-up truck.

This is the Caprice Classic style sedan.

Overall I think they are much improved and pretty close to 1/285 scale (certainly within the scale range of GHQ infantry). If anyone is looking for civilian vehicles these should definitely be considered.

Hey, y'all...

I know they're neither vehicles, nor in 1:285 scale -- but a model railroad supplier (Walthers) has their Preiser Z-scale (1:220) unpainted Figures set on sale for about $30 ($6 off the usual $36 price). Various civilian figures and a few animals; if you're not absolutely sold on scale and don't mind painting your own -- these may be of interest to you!

Oops indeed -- the link had to go. The policy is not specific to direct competitors, but rather to webstores. Any web site which sells products, no matter what products, should not be linked.

Just curious, how do you think Microform's 240 scale civilian figures would compare to the GHQ infantry? I'm thinking of getting some to create a few clusters of non-middle eastern civilians. But knowing how much infantry sizes vary from company to company, i don't want to be fielding giants among men or vice versa.
