Seeking Marine LAR TO&E

Post by Timothy OConnor »

I'm looking for detailed info for a U.S. Marine Light Armored Reconnaissance battalion. Any help would be very much appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Tim

Just a note on the MWSS in that document. They now do not have seperate MWSSs for rotary and fixed wing aircraft, but a combined unit capable of Expeditionary Airfield construction for both.

Outstanding start! I think that I can figure out the allocation of LAVs based on the org chart and the vehicle list (I hope anyway!)

Any info available on platoon and company-level small arms and support weapons, M249s, M240s, SMAWs, etc? Will need to figure out how to rate the dismount stands.

Finally, where do the LAV mortar carriers reside? Concentrated at battalion-level or 2 per company?

When I was in the Marines the support units never deployed as a complete unit. The base unit is the infantry battalion. Tom Clancy has a book out called the Marine Expeditionary Unit. Basically it details the Battalion Landing team. Post LAV deployment and M1's Great easy to digest organisation charts. It also list the most common support that unit would receive going in.

I love the 80's version of the BLT. Not just because that was the time I was one of Uncle Sam's Missguieded Children. But you can justify having the New Jersy as back up. YOu have nine 16" guns helping you ahore and yoru opponent doesn't!

In the book "No True Glory" the author, Bing West, includes pretty good ORBATs for the Marines at Fallujah. In general it does seem that individual LAR companies are attached to BLTs instead of serving as a complete battalion. But there is one interesting unit though called Task Force LAR, part of RCT 1 and not part of a BLT. Here's its ORBAT for Phantom Fury:

Task Force LAR
HQ Co (-) (REIN), 3d LAR Bn
Co C, 3d LAR
Co B, 1st Bn (REIN)/23rd Marines
36th Commando Bn (-) (Iraqi)

It's the only formation of its kinds in Phantom Fury and seems sort of odd. The mix of LAR troops, a marine Rifle company, and native forces looks interesting, and all in a battalion-sized force.

Still haven't been able to find detailed TO&E info for the LAR battalion, company, or platoon though.
