Is it best to glue the gun ring and 50 cal on before painting? Thanks in advance

It depends on the type of glue you use, but in general, I would say, paint first. The paint will adhere to a glued surface differently than to an unpainted one. And it will look uneven. The examples below were first painted, then glued. No gun rings, but you get the idea.

And you can always touch it up after assembly.

This is a White scout car in Soviet service.
