How to paint SS-troops?

Post by Teemu Drufva »

Hello!

I am going to paint whole SS-panzer division in 1:285 scale (yeah, 100+ tanks and thousands of infantry) and would like to have some help about how to paint those little guys...

Any ideas?

Mu,

Welcome to the board!.. Are you looking for colors, techniques or both? Aside from the usual Osprey books which will give more color schemes than you will ever need, I recommend you spend some time looking at these three resources.

1. The Miniatures Page WW2 Land Boards: http://theminiaturespage.com/boards/boa ... od=ww2land - there are links specific to microscale models as well as painting tips, techniques and color resources.

2. The "Show us yer Stuff" thread on this forum. We have some gifted painters and modelers who are happy to show their work along with their techniques.

3. Troy's website: http://www3.telus.net/Ritterkrieg Troy is one of the aforementioned gifted modelers. He has lots of photos of his work as well as painting tutorials. There are many others. When you are the "Show us yer Stuff" thread, you can click on the www link at the bottom of any post and it will take you to other folk's website with equally stunning work. There are too many too mention, Troy's just comes to mind.

Good luck, you face a daunting but rewarding task.

Techniques (and some painted examples) are what I am mostly after.

I have painted 15mm SS-troops before (pea-dot camouflage). But I have no idea how to do some camo in 1/285. I would like to know some ss-camo that would be do-able in 1/285 scale.

BTW should I use those brand-new-no-photo Late war infantry or something else for ss-troops?

Thanks for the great links! I actually got idea what I am going to try out.

Troy had some stunning ss-troops!

These are some SS Grenadiers in fall pea-dot. They are a mix of late war AT weapons, winter infantry and regular individual infantry. The winter infantry work well for camo smocks.

Without seeing the Wermacht 47 infantry it is hard to say if they will work, but I suppose it depends on what timeframe you are modeling. I hear some of them are armed with STGW 44s so they obviously wouldn't work for anything before late '44. I also don't know if they are in smocks or what.

Ah, yeah, forgot to mention that my aim is ´44 troops. Maybe Cobra or something, I am going to use TO&E of Das Reich for how many tanks etc.

I doubt you can tell an MP-43 from a StGw-44 in this scale...
Even with my really bad German, my source seems to say that almost 20,000 MP-43 were made in the autumn of 1943. So you should be "good" on the weapons in 44.
Guess I need to dig out "Small Arms" & read up again.

My concern would be if the W47 designer decided to give them those P-45 "DDR" helmets instead of standard stahlhelm or M-43 caps...

Me? I'm hoping I can get away with using the "81's" somehow...

CavDog-Very nice infantry!
