Burning Tanks

Post by Sepp »

Has anyone copied the FoW burning tank markers? I have tried and gave up,too fiddly. Any ideas would be helpfull as they do add to the cool look of the battle table :)

I hadn't realized they had special markers for burning tanks.

Yeah. Interesting. But seems like a lot of work for a marginal result.

As much as I like the tall column of smoke winding skywards, I don't much care for the flame and smoke being next to the tank. That is the natural result of using a stiff tall column of anything for your burning tank marker - it needs to be mounted to a weight (coin or washer) and placed on the table beside the tank. Doesn't "do it" for me.

I much prefer my burning tank markers to make it look like it is the actual tank that is burning.

we just use a piece of cotton placed under a turret, hull, what have you. we have a little box filled with little scraps of the stuff. when its placed, we tease it into a cool looking smoke colume.

Hamster bedding. It's like cotton wool.

It comes in different colours, if you can find the dark brown in your local pet shop you're half way there.

For 6mm I make card strips just big enough to slide under the tank model but with extra length - glue some of the brown hamster bedding to the end, then liberally douse the base of it in red and yellow flames, and hey presto, burning tank marker for next to no money!

(looks like you might have to cut and paste that full link to get to the pic)

Saw your photos Sultenbev and I may try to copy your idea as if they are premade the game moves faster than Mk1's marker. The FoW type sits on top of the vehicle so it looks more realistic, however it will not work in this scale.Thinking of useing the idea of a piece of cardstock under the tank ,glueing a paperclip, cut to differant sizes, then glueing a cottenball to it.Spray it black, then yellow at the bottom. This way I may bend it over the tank so it looks like it is comming from the top. Will it work, who knows! But it's worth a try.I have twenty premade for FoW and they look good thru my periscope

Burning wrecks

Somebody had posted some pictures a while back of some nice markers. Just remove the vehicle and replace it with one of the markers. Blocks LOS and to me is better looking than the old dyed cotton balls I used to use under the turrets or under the edge of the vehicle Google 'Litko'. They come in different sizes and I bought the small ones which look okay.

And it makes Hammy all the more comfortable when he scurries across the table.

I use grey Hamster bedding, a colour that now seems as common as rocking-horse-£$!t :)

I just lift the turret, place a small amount over the mounting hole and replace the turret. Looks great.

I made some similar to the FOW markers a while back

Image

I was thinking of magnetising them but ran out of time. On some tanks they didn't stay on very well but blu-tack would work if think.

I used Woodlands scenics autumn flock and a thin piece of wire to hold it together and lots of PVA glue. I started with yellow flock at the bottom, followed by orange and then red and then I airbrushed the top black, and then drybrushed it grey. I painted the bottom yellow and a bit of white as well. The PVA seeped to the bottom as it dried and created a flat "base".

I hope that make sense. I made about 40 in a couple of hours (not including drying time).

Cheers

What I've done is glue some cotton to a steel base 1/2" x 3/4 ", at one of the ends of the base. (The long end). I pull the cotton out till it looks right to me. I'll spray paint it black and sometimes use orange paint as well.

When a kill happens, I slide one of the bases under the tank so that it looks as if smoke is coming from the tank. No messing with the turret or anything else just slide it under the tank. All of my tanks fit on the base.

I use the grey foam that came in my "Battle Box". Just tore off and shaped some little cone shaped pieces, cut a slit in the end, and then dry-brushed the flames using red, orange and yellow paint at the bottom. All you have to do is spread the flame marker and put it on the AFV that's been destroyed The foam marker does not damage the paint on your minis and stays in place.

Also, made up some artillery makers on clear plastic 1" squares.
