NATO in late 50s earyl 60s?
How would NATO troops have been armed in this period? Would US troops for Korea be suitable for deployment in western europe?

G'day EC.
Yep, you would be spot on the money there. The M14 had started to come online throughout the 50's and 60's, and eventually by '65 it was the main rifle. However if you go with the post-Korea period you will be much better suited to WW2 US soldiers.
NATO soldiers like the British would still have Lee Enfields available, although the SLR was well in service by the late 50's.
