Thanks again, guys. When I get some of the infantry completed, I'll "shoot" and post them.

ACWBill: Really nice Nap's. Reminds me of my first experience at wargaming when I lived in Fla. The old 25mm days. Good boards, too. :D

AU Cav: I'm not sure that I could do rucks. A little too small for these old eyes. As has been posted before, a detail set would come in real handy.

SR, what are you using for your flocking?

Thanks

SR:

I really like the deft hand your models show with regard to the weathering. What colors did you use for your washes and dry-brushing?

I also like the mix of temperate- and desert-painted vehicles in your unit. That correlates well to the experiences of my friends who have been in Iraq over the past couple of years. A nice touch of "from the field" realism!

Pete,
The flocking on the bases is just plain old child's play sand. I run it through a sifter, white glue to the base, then dry brush a lightened sand color to match the vehicle weathering. BTW, the round bases are 3/4" dia. discs liberated from my wife's school stuff (don't tell her). The rectangular bases are 3/4"x1" .030 plastic sheet.

Mark 1,
I used Polly Scale paints for this project. NATO Black, NATO Green, NATO Earth Red on the tri-color vehicles. US Tan Special on the desert color vehicles. Grimy Black for tires. Black/Earth Red mix for tracks. The wash is a mix of Black, Earth Red, and Future floor wax. The lighter weathering color is a mix of US Sand and White. The Future floor wax acts as a sealer to the undercoat and smooths things out. Finally, everything gets a coat of trusty Testor's Dullcote.

As to the realism of combining desert colored and three-toned in one unit, if you are going to do this, you might as well do it right. Or at least as close as possible.

Glad to share my few tricks with you. Semper Fi!

Some weeks back there was a thread on MERDC camouflage. Well, here are my first attempts. They still need to be filthed up a little. I had to photograph them on a white background because the white paint tended to get a bit dazzling otherwise. I'm not a smart enough photographer the fix that.

I'm looking forward to getting some of the M-60A1 model and doing more of these, but I've been told I have to finish some of the stuff I have before getting more!

BTW, has anyone got a suggestion for the Humbrol colour for field drab? They used to have it as a list item, but it doesn't appear to be available anymore, so I'm after the next best thing.

Hey, everybody!

First off -- nice work! I always enjoy seeing what y'all are doing -- it inspires me to keep working to improve my modeling!

Now, for some of my latest efforts -- no, not of my models, my painting isn't "there" yet (drat!) -- but pictures of some of my "new" terrain...

A note -- I "strayed" from my usual photographic efforts and took these pictures outdoors in "late afternoon" sunlight, with the hexes sitting on a dark blue-green towel. I thought for some of the pictures, the shadows cast by the low-angle light might help to accent some of the terrain features. I also thought I'd get a better "color" by using natural sunlight. However, late-afternoon light might not be my best bet... Still, I think the pictures are good enough to share... so here they are!

The first picture is of "uneven terrain" -- I made some small "hills" or "ridges" from scraps of styrofoam, blended them in with Durham's Water Putty, then finished them "in the usual manner".

Image

The next picture is of a "stone wall" running alongside a road. The stones in the wall are Woodland Scenic's C1272 Coarse Buff Talus (Rock Debris). A full description of "How I Did It" is on my website...

Image

The next two pictures are "field hexes" -- I got the idea for these from Troy... or more accurately, from pictures he posted on eBay when he sold some of his hexes (I assume they were "old" or "surplus" hexes). I'd read GHQ's instructions on making "field hexes" or "crop hexes"... for some reason, it never dawned on me to make them anything other than covering the entire hex! But Troy's pictures showed me otherwise... I did go "one step further" and added a row of "bushes" around each field. Might not do that next time... or then again, I might "think outside the box" and come up with something else entirely -- who knows!?

Enjoy!

Well done Tom. Your use of flocking is very realistic. I enjoy your terrain pics when posted. Keep up the good work!

Picture trial...

Post by 1ComOpsCtr »

I've not had a lot of luck posting pictures thus far. Another attempt

Image

Seems like this time it worked so I am going to try another that may be interesting for the group. Its of a "warlord's compound" that can be pretty much anywhere in the world but is used in our Bosnia and Afghanistan scenarios...

Image

We use this series of terrain pieces for conventions (upcoming DIECON in St. Louis) as well as when working with small units (Marine Scout/Sniper Platoons). For those of you interested the chain link fence is made by scribing lines on thin clear plastic. Very time consuming, but realistic, don't you think?

Image

The picture above is of a 1/285-1/300 scale portion of the Shugart Gordon MOUT facility at Fort Polk, Louisians. We tie this model to our regular simulations to allow the participants to run the ingress and egress portions of their mission on the table and conduct the actual extraction of an HVT or other operation at the live fire range.

Thanks for your patience while I tried my luck at setting up these pictures...

Additional pictures from training scenario

Post by 1ComOpsCtr »

Gentlemen,

Here are two additional photos from one of our training scenarios conducted prior to the deployment of one of the Marine Reserve Battalions...

Image

This terrain model will be used at the upcoming DIECON convention the first weekend of June 2006 in the St. Louis area. The scenario will involve the 4th Brigade of the 10th Mountain and members of the 5th Group SOC.

I've added a ton of new models to my website -- www.microarmormayhem.com -- including a number of GHQ's LAV series, which are really significantly better than any of the competition's. Also new this update are a dozen or so rare ISM models and several Nichimo 1/300 plastic aircraft.

Here are a few shots of GHQ LAVs:
