Opinions of available Modern Rules

Post by Its me »

Hi guys,

A query what are your opinions on Modern Rules for micro. The vision here is being inspired by the World War III series of books by General Hackett and others such as Team Yankee and the Chieftains I want a fast play fun non detail game.

I am a experienced FOW gamer and a veteran of other periods for the last 23 yrs. Over that time I have played WRG (last and current versions), Challenger, a home written variant of Operation Warboard (yes I'm that old.... ). I own and have read OMG and GHQ's rules which both have some nice concepts but thought I would put this queston to the group before embarking on yet another wargaming project.

Remember the goal here is vision, fun , relaxed, doesn't require gazillions of tables to be looked up and most of all looks dramatic when put on a large table as a demo/participation with lots of nice terrain and models.

Thanks in advance, cheers Rex

If you're looking for 1:1 scenarios, I would recommend thwe WRG rules, with Challenger a distant second. WRG allows a game to be played fairly rapidly, sacrificing a lot of detail for the speed. For a platoon (1 model =5 vehicles), my first choice would be GDW's 'Combined Arms' rules. Good luck with your project.

Well... WRG will get you the most games, especially if you're in Auckland (there is a >66 competition running up there) or around Palmy Nth (three or four of us) or New Plymouth (two guys there). They're ok as long as you stick to the period they were written for, and try avoiding anything too much past about '95. You'll be lucky to find a Challenger 2000 player. I've got 'em but don't think I've managed a game. Too many tables, too many percentages to work out.

Cold War Commander is due out Dec 1st. They're probably going to be more 'fun' than those above.

And then there are our hosts rules, but they'd be few and far between in these parts I suspect.

My rules are more detailed than most and probably aren't the best for beginners.
They wouldn't be able to run a horde of minis first time out.
Also, for a demo game the realism probably isn't priority one so I wouldn't recommend them for non-serious gamers.

They however are 1:1 tanks for more realistic play than WRG or Challenger.
They are available workd wide as they can be downloaded and are FREE.

You need my WW2 rules (also free) as these are an expansion to them.
All your tanks are belong to us.

Have you tried the Team Yankee Boardgame?

I think GDW produced it.

I tried using it with miniatures and it was great.

We played a full T-72 battalion vs M1 Company + bits in about 2hrs.

Worked great.

It's also easy to create your own data for other forces, eg Brits.
