I use Fire As She Bears as well. Excellent Trafalgar scenario pack for it, which also allows you to change from non-gridded play to hex play if you wish. The regular 2d edition uses octogons to keep track of movement and direction, which gives you more compass points than anything short of the games with turn templates. Great game for large battles but will handle small battles of 3-ship squadrons and up. There is also a campaign module written for it, but useable with other Age of Sail games. First edition is probably still available on Ebay, but uses a square grid play area.
