BEF Armor Colors, Paints and Basing
Anyone have any information regarding the paint color I would use for BEF tanks in the Battle of France? I can't find any pictures and I don't want to paint vehicles the wrong color.
Do people use GHQ paints or other kinds?' I use Vallejo because I am too impatient to wait for GHQ to ship paint.
Bases- I was going to use pennies, but there is not enough room to mark them for ID purposes so now I am looking at 1"x1" cards as done in the microarmor rule book. I imagine I will have to use some sort of plastic unless anyone else has an idea, heh, which I am hoping someone does.
Thanks again for your help

bases
I would strongly recommend metal bases...
http://www.miniatureservicecenter.com/m ... .htm#metal
By using a metal base for your vehicles and troopers you can easily transport units in boxes or trays using a self adhesive magnetic material attached to the bottom of the box or tray. See photo below...

We use the magnetic self adhesive business card holders that come in packages of 50 or 100 that are the perfect size for the 5.5" X 4" X 1" boxes you see above. Each box contains a unit or two which makes passing out and collecting very easy at games and conventions. The box top can be labeled as can the inside of the box to allow easy collection after a game.
Note the vehicles in the box above are all part of a convoy for a specific simulation. We also use individual skirmish bases for some of our simulations as can be seen in the picture below... The bases below are 1/2" square and come in large quantity (50) packs making a great time savings when basing figures individually. 1" X 1" bases (36)are also standard and will work for the GHQ basing system, ...but other sizes work well for individual vehicles as well as mini-dioramas as objectives of command posts, etc...

This picture illustrates an objective/point of interest mini-diorama on a large metal base.

You can see the small bases under the horses, people, and tractor convoy in the picture below which make transporting and organization much easier with the boxes similar to the Rider 23 convoy box above. Using a 1 to 1 representative scale allows a US ACR troop of 4 M1A2's, 6 Bradleys, and their dismounted infantry stands to fit in one of the boxes illustrated.

Hope this helps,
Will

Explaining above:
using the MAFVA as a guide to the colors, I have actual chips of the Humbrol & Vallejo ranges, and alot of Revells. So, when I say R65 is close to V892, don 't forget this would be too dark for 6mm, and needs to be lightened. You lighten greens with yellow. Same goes for my H159/V890 comparison.
As for H80, V922 is a close direct match. V833 is my guess for a color for 6mm.
Vallejo didn't have any lightened versions of 892 & 890 off the shelf, so you need to do that.

Re: bases
Indeed. I just purchased 3 orders of stands.I would strongly recommend metal bases...

Here is a picture of a Marine Company (India) used during Marine CPX for the 3rd Battalion, 24th Marines, in 1997. Each platoon is boxed individually. Note the nail (dulled) that allows easy handling by Marines who are not modelers or gamers. The small handle allows extended use without damage to the figures.

Note the cotton in the box (they come this way) which helps keep things in place in the box (turrets, etc). The magnet base of the box is made using two business card magnets available at most business stores. The boxes are from a local box supplier.

Each stand is marked with the parent organization on the left and the individual stand's identity on the right.

I included the picture above because it shows smaller individual bases for the modern one-to-one convoy simulations ComOpsCtr conducts. It's too bad GHQ doesn't do a modern heavy tank transport, but this one works after explaining why we don't have a current correct model to the participants. Using the smaller bases allows more vehicles to be included in each box. The 1" X 1" stands limit the available space in the boxes above.
The weapons (with crewman) mounted on the top of the vehicles would also make a nice addition to the GHQ line. A mix of turrets, flat mounts, crewed or not, would be a real help (as it is I must sacrifice another vehicle to make the modification) which adds considerably to the cost.

I produced the identity tags through my graphic program: Corel Draw. Printed them on contact paper, cut the labels out, and attached them to the bases which had areas left un-grassed at each baseline corner. I previously hand lettered most of the units, but this newer method is the easiest to read because of the type face and the size of the print. It is a little more work, but I believe it is worth the trouble.

Here is a supplier on the net, but you can find them locally. I found some in dark green that are really great, but they are available in several colors including white.

5.25" x 3-7/8" x 7/8" Set up cotton Filled #53 Jewelry Boxes - White Krome and Kraft 100 Boxes per case... they were $53 for a case. I found them for $45 per case locally.
My wife used an identical dark red box for some of her craft work...

Here is a picture of one of the troops of the 107th Cavalry boxed and organized as previously mentioned.

Note the scouts and the IFV crew stands which are occasionally dismounted during the simulations we conduct with the Army at Fort Polk.
We use 1/2", 3/4", and 1" square metal bases to mount figures and 1/2" wide by various lengths to mount vehicles for our 1-to-1 ratio simulations and convention games.

Here is another source for AFV and general vehicle colors though I am not sure exactly how accurate they are they give you an idea.
