I think it'd be really cool to use the micro armor minis and terrain maker hexes to make a "large" scale version of one of my favorite wargames- Red Parachutes (Soviet Airborne Assult Across the Dnepr) by Avalanche press.
It would be a HUGE project and a massive undertaking but I think it'd be pretty cool.
(It would take a MASSIVE table!)
I'm not sure about a couple things though.
The game has "highways" on the map and roads as well.
What were the highways in this area like then? I'm thinking the traditional 4 lane highway we're all used to. I also see the regular roads as just crushed stone roads that you'd see in the country or dirt roads.
If anyone has any historical and/or area knowledge I'd greatly appreciate it.
Now my only task is to get the money together to start this project.
(If I'm lucky I may be able to get the rest of my gaming club to undertake this with me.
Not only will it greatly reduce the cost but I think it'd make a fun project and give us a good reason to run a few micro armor tournaments again!)
Oh, for all those interested here's the site for the game:
http://www.avalanchepress.com/gameRPC.php
yes, the $59.99 price tag on this one is nuts but I got it for $10 at a gaming convention in Novi, MI from the Titan Games booth.

Has anyone here ever tried this kind of project before?

Never tried this type of project before, but I have developed a version of the actual airdrop itself. Tthe scenario was designed for Command Decison 2, but it could be adapted to other rule sets as well.
I've used a Terrain Maker hex layout, and worked the topography from old US Dept of Defense maps. The maps take a little time to download.

Enjoy !

Rather than go to 4" TerrainMaker hexes, why not buy some of the pre-hexed terrain mats from Monday Knight Productions. They make them with 1, 1.5 and 2" hexes. Then you at least have the base done and just have to add the terrain. Plus, at 2km per hex, most of your terrain will be "placeholders." I mean, woods will just be a tree or two (or you could use clump flocking instead), towns will be a building, etc.
You'll still need a lot of minis which I'm sure will make GHQ happy!

highpriestrsw2,
The only "marriage" between micro armor and a board game that I'm aware of was many years ago -- in the early 80's?? -- Avalon Hill did two modules of their "Advanced Squad Leader" system in much larger hexes (2" or so across?), with the intent of using micro armor for individual tanks, infantry stands, etc., but played on one of the boards as the terrain. And as I recall, GHQ marketed several of their packages with an "ASL" logo on them, to help tie the two together. I think the modules were "Streets of Fire" and "Hedgerow Hell". Not sure of how many of the GHQ packages were printed in this manner...
I think one of "the other manufacturers" of micro armor did a series of German and American infantry stands based on these games as well.
Hope this helps!
Regards,
Tom Stockton

Boardgaming upgrade
I and a friend of mine are making something similar, using boardgame rules with miniatures and model terrain...
I'm using a modified Air Cav for contemporary and my friend is using Lock & Load for his vietnam collection.
The only incompatibility is stacking, in boardgames you can stack many units in a single hex, but for miniatures the "problem" is solved by making each hex = 2" across... that way you can "stack" at least six or seven units/stands in a single "hex" area.
For the rest translate each hex range = 2" (just as in that old science fiction microgame turned into microarmor miniature scale).
You can do the same but in a 3" per hex area for more units stacking...

My whole start in microarmor began by an attempt to "remake" a board wargame.
Although in my case it was not remaking the game by running microarmor on terrain, but rather by running microarmor on the wargame board itself.
I started buying microarmor to replace the cardboard chits that came with Avalon Hill's PanzerBlitz game.
I still have that game in the closet. Its been with me since 1973.
And so have my GHQ several of my T-34s and KV-1s.

Same here.
Except I recently dug out my Panzer Blitz rules and gave them an airing. Quite fun.
I also use miniatures for Squad Leader, Team Yankee (good set of modern rules), Assault/Boots'n Saddles/Chieftain/Bundeswehr, West End Games Air+Armor - cor, tons of stuff.
In fact any boardgame going I try and use miniatures with it.

Board games
Team Yankee I have!
great game but the counters need a front and the way they have done it is good for cardboard counters but minis are better
Also have Ait & Armour and I'm planning on using it for campaign games... using the GHQ Microarmor: Modern Rules.
The unit scale is very similar to GHQ, turns are 2 hours and a hex is a kilometer, so is good to make a campaign based on the entire offensive os the area...
Whenever there is a combat just note the units involved and make the miniatue scenario. Locations in the hex map determine board entry in the miniature terrain; and any support (artillery, airstrike, etc) can be determine while declaring the attacks... for the electronic countermissions there I have to make a few pre game rules maybe...
Rigut now I dont have my copi of the game, but I hope to get my hands in it soon

Rolando - good stuff mate
If you need a copy of Air+Armor try either the Cyberboard or Vassal modules. They'll also have the tables and stuff that you can print out.
A link to this is at: http://www.yodellingcrickets.org/cb/cbIndex.html
There's also an active discussion group over at Comsimworld at: http://talk.consimworld.com/WebX?14@588 ... 1dcdfd59/0
I was thinking of making an ADC module for it but with the Cyberboard and Vassal modules there's no point.
Have you also tried SPI's old Central Front series? I did an ADC module for that a few years back. the maps for that are great.
Cheers,
Battler
