ADA Museum at Fort Bliss

Post by 1ComOpsCtr »

During a very recent trip to Texas for a wedding I had the privilege to visit the Anti-Aircraft Museum (Air Defense Artillery Museum) at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas. I went there to do research on the US 90mm AA guns, primarily the early M-1 version, for a project I am working on for a business acquaintance. The photo below shows the later 90mm A2 version with the shield designed to be dual purpose AA/AT.

Prior to visiting I contacted Maryann Neubert, the Museum's Registrar, who did an excellent job of providing information and directing me to the correct displays, etc., making our visit more efficient than I had dreamed possible. She was also kind enough to provide copies of many of her file photos detailing most of the WW2 AA equipment in the US arsenal, as well as many excellent photos of captured equipment. The museum has an original "AfrikaKorps" 88mm gun on display, as well as most of the equipment used during the war and since, plus some from WW1.

She also provided a complete series of photos detailing our defense of the bridge at Ramagen which provided some interesting insights.

Anyone who has any interest in this slice of military history need only visit the Museum to understand the importance of ADA in WW2 and since.

There is also a very good "gift shop" within the museum with hand made wooden models of much of the current ADA arsenal in stock for the collector, all of which are locally made and of excellent quality.

I enjoy the last time I was thru that area back in '92...

I'm sure the museum has grown a bit since then.

(IE7 users, youmight get the dreaded 'There is a problem with this website's security certificate.' when you click onthe link. I blew right past it without any cares though.)

Actually, its a Nike Hercules. It had the capability for both conventional HE or nuclear warheads.

Isn't the one on the right a Nike Ajax and the one on the left is a Nike Hercules.

Not sure. I pulled them off the FAS website, though they look like they might be from Aberdeen (haven't been there for years and I'm not near my own photos from there right now).

Nice Pics. I was stationed at Fort Bliss in the mid 80s and I went through the Museum. I had forgotten about it.
