Not got these models myself but I'd assume they're in case you want to have the turret hatches open with crew standing behind them.

The items in question are commander's cupolas for late model T34/76 M1943s.

Gort is right.

I have a few of the late-model T-34s from GHQ. The extra "thingies" are cupolas.

The cupola was never a standard / common feature on the T-34. Often the tanks with the cupolas were assigned to unit commanders.

So only some small fraction of your tanks should have it. For this reason (I presume) GHQ has made them an "extra" that you can add or not at your choice. I use them to identify platoon and company command tanks.

This is just one of the fun things about GHQ's T-34 models. You get a couple of different turrets, a couple of different hulls, and the ability to add cupolas (or not), so that you wind up with units that have a lot of variety among their tanks -- which is a good reflection of Soviet armored units in WW2.
