Observations from the NTC

Post by voltigeur »

I'm blueprinting a terrain set for what I will call the MATC (Micro Armor Training Center) and I'm looking at an area south east of Mount Tiefort on Ft Irwin. In 2 publications of Red Thrust, Observations of the NTC. They are talking about a pass that opens into a plain where the Blue force defends on a formation called the whale and an ajacent ridge line.

I have been looking at Google Earth (http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&tab=wl) and I'm not seeing terrain that looks like the composite maps from this newsletter. Also I have 2 books Infantry Attacks and Armored Attack. The maps in these books looks like it is at least inspired by the NTC.

Is there someone out there that deployed to this area that can help me fill in holes for the terrain? I want to do a fixed terrain set for fast set up. That can be used to teach new players and test my home grown rules.

While this won't be an excact replication I'd like it to be close.

I'll see what I can find here. If I'm unable to find the maps I know I have somewhere I will see if I can get a set of 1/50K when I'm at the NTC next month for work.

Voltiguer,

The Whale at the NTC is the formation at 35 degrees 13' 44.27" N, 116 degrees 28' 55.97" W. Its elevation is just over 500 M. On Google Earth, it appears almost black and rises about 40 meters above the nearby desert floor.

Hope this helps.

Thanks let me know what you find! Being able to look at the training area boundries will definitly help.

Le Scrounge Thanks for the coordinates. I noticed on the new terrain feature of Google that the whale looks almost like 2 hills with a big seam in the middle of it.
