Where do you do the majority of your routine gaming, whether as a member of a formal club or ad hoc group?

A. Private Home(s)

B. Retail Shop

C. Other Public Space (eg library, community center, etc.)

D. None (ie only play at conventions/special events)

Our group meets at a local community center/police station/fire station once each month. We also do ad hoc games at private homes and a retail shop (Hobbytown USA).

...and also D. Conventions (I host games at local conventions).

Would like to do B. Retail Store but everytime I call our local shop to setup a game they either don't have the space available (I do naval games 6' x 8') or they are going to close too early. Local shop is setup primarily for fantasy card games and small board war games. Hard to expand the hobby with a local shop that just isn't interested.

I game in my air-conditioned garage in South Florida. My club refers to it as my "Gaming Emporium" as it has more unpainted lead than most Hobby Shops.

B: My most recent gaming has been at a local hobby shop called "Game Kastle" in the South Bay. They have two shops, and "PaloAlto" (on this forum) has organized a semi-regular set of games at first one, then the other of their shops. He has more recently also started to organize games at private homes and/or other locations (a meeting hall or some such). I join in his games as often as I can, although admittedly I've been struggling on my calendar for the past several months.

A: Over the past four or five years most of my gaming has been at private homes, both mine and CG Erickson's (occasionally on this forum). Had some magnificent games in that timeframe.

C. Other Public Space -Spenard Lions club has let my gaming club ( www.theamgc.com ) use their space every Sat., and now every Fri. (Pretty much a separate group but still part of our club.)

D. None (ie only play at conventions/special events) So far only been Gencon for the last four years which flying down from AK can get expensive if do it more than once a year.

Because there are so few historical wargamers in the Netherlands, I don't get to game often. To all you Americans the travelling distances involved might not be very impressive, but with everyone spread out over the country, it still prevents us from organizing a game more than once every few months.

When we do get together, we play at conventions or in a local shop. They don't sell GHQ, but they let us use the tables.

All in all, I really wish that more people would be interested in historical wargaming over here.

Rutgervanm, Where do you like in the Netherlands? I'll be making a trip next February to Amsterdam and the surrounding areas.

Are there any game stores in Amsterdam?

Regarding the lack of historical gamers, it is probably because a lot of people prefer not to think about it. Given a few years, the hobby might pick up as the horros of WWI and WWII fade from the public's memory.

I live in Leiden, which is a little to the southwest of Amsterdam. Unfortunately there are no stores that I know of in Amsterdam, except GW and they of course won't let you play anything other than their own products (and you probably wouldn't even wanna game there if you could, because of the copious amounts of little screaming children who would only want to pit their freshly bought and horribly painted Terminators against your M1A2's (GW: curse them!

)).

However, in Leiden (which is only a half hour train ride from Amsterdam Central) there is a cool little shop with a public gaming table. I you want to, please PM me the details of your trip. Perhaps I could set something up with a few of the Dutch microarmour gamers?

Btw, I don't think the small number of historical gamers in the Netherlands is because of our collective memory of WW2. If that were the case than you would expect greater numbers o Napoleonic or Ancients gamers, but they are missing too. Personally I would say it is because of a lack of a military tradition like you have in the UK or the US. The army has a different position in society (more isolated I would guess) and warfare and its history is something almost no one is interested in.

Lately we have been putting on at least one game a month at The Last Square. This is "our" shop in Madison,Wisconsin. We have been doing this since January and have been getting an awful lot of onlookers. We just picked up one new fellow on our last game (last Saturday). We hope to get more involved.
We also play at my house every now and then, just 2 or 3 hour games.
