Hi,
very interesting discussion. We played 1/1 and 4/1 games. We even tried playing with a 6mm infantry platoon individually based for 1/1 scale games (with 2/3 tanks on a side, hidden deployment of defenders, on a 1,80X1,20 m table)and players were really surprised, but our home rules with charts from various origin were not that good.
I would agree here with Tim' posts and arguments (on ratios/ground scale, terrain, simulation etc.) and add wargaming is a mock of reality...
Now , back to cover !
Cheers,

Hey there. I figured I should drop a line in this discussion. And new poster and hopefully by tommorow or the day after I can start doing modern combat.

I am a long time wargamer. Ive been playing since Third Edition 40K. Lately Ive gotten tired with their business practices and went over to Battletech. A buddy of mine and I started talking about how we both would love to see a modern combat game similar to Flames of War. Even tho we both agree that WW2 era Americans were all great heroes we are both rather would play a modern era game as WW2 is getting over done. (that discussion led me to this site) 40K uses a true 1:1 scale, and while it can be fun at times, other times it is full of uneeded micromanagement that gets me frustrated more than anything.

Battletech is more of a hybrid, it still uses 1:1 untill you get to infantry platoons and points of battle armor. which makes it more manageable as a small hex base with three guys allows you to have a minds eye view of whats there, yet isnt unwieldly with the 28 to 6 dudes on the base that are normaly found in the sets.

If you like a modern style of FoW, do a web search - there is a group putting a modified set of rules together for it. My buddy in Virginia has started tinkering. I dont have the site, but if you do a search, you should find it. There are several here on the list doing FoW WW2 in micro scale, so should be able to mix their advice with whatever you find from the moderns guys.

Oh, and welcome to the forum!
