Battlefield Mysteries: Michael Wittman...

Post by dougeagle »

Hey all,

This past Remembrance Day (what we call it in Canada- same as Veterans Day in the US) there was a show called Battlefield Mysteries (mainly about Canadians in WW2) and this one was about who actually killed the infamous Tiger ace Michael Wittman. The host of the show went into detail about the operations of the Canadians at the time, basically the Sherbrooke Fusiliers Armoured Regiment, as well as the British 1st Northamptonshire Yoemanry at the time of the Canadian Operation Totalize.
It would seem that when Wittman and his Tigers began to counter attack the Canadians on Hill 112, or was about too, the Tigers came under attack. It was speculated at one point that it was a Typhoon launched rocket that destroyed Wittman's Tiger, but apparently the damage done by the rockets would have pretty much destroyed the entire back section of the Tiger tank...so that was ruled out. The other speculation was that a Firefly from the British forces was the one that destroyed Wittman's, yet on show they had found out that the Firefly was actually too far to get the type of hit that was made on the tank. But, the other Tiger's under Wittman were destroyed by the British Firefly...something like 3 or 4 destroyed in a matter of minutes from ranges of 600- 700 yards, while the Canadians were located at chateau around Gaumesnil...which were apparently only a few hundred yards away.
The damage done to Wittman's tank was found on the left rear quarter of the tank, which suggested that it was the Canadians that made the fatal shot which apparently hit the ammo storage which destroyed the tank. However, there are no hard claims to this as apparently the Regiments command vehicle was destroyed which is the reason why the British made the claim...totally understandable.

I thought the show was rather interesting and as more evidence comes forward, certain things that could not be answered are being answered, such as this. Now, I posted this to share with everybody and have a friendly discussion with others too see what it is that they think of this topic. :D
