Another aspect to 'solo' gaming - You can play with a group as well. Rules-controlled opponents lend themselves well to cooperative play. This can be very handy with a convention-style or introductory game for a group. They work very well for campaigns as well.

Then you're using the wrong rules! He (you) shouldn't. Well, there should be a good deal of uncertainty as to what will happen next anyhow. And a good set of rules, or mechanics adapted to a set of rules, will place constraints on what your opponent (you) can do in specific situations.tstockton wrote:I dunno... the guy I've solo wargamed with always seemed to know what I was planning...
So yeah, he knows what you want to do, but not necessarily what you will do.

Solo Gaming
Team
I have been solo gaming for years with the old General Quarters rules (modified for my solo) using CNC and mostly GHQ ships. I do have the new GHQ rules but haven't tried them solo yet ( a lot of study).
About the only problem I had was with the torpedoes, I fixed that with a die roll 33% chance of the target ship turning left ,right or charging on. Then the modifers apply.
I have quity a few sihps so I play campaing games, I set them up and play them at a later date BUT the later games might change because the countries only have the ships I have commisioned in my fleets (painted). I usually have 10 or more ships in a game (Task Force or Task group) at a time they must complete a task with points applied . Now this will take time some and the fun is I can't do this in one setting, when I come back to the game who is doing what?
After each game the ships are either on call for duty, in repair for a number of games depending on damage or lost.
I have played most of the real world scenarios River Plate, Demark strait and many more ,most won on a die roll .
If you let your mind loose you can gain ground .
