Free rules?

Im looking for a good free rulesystem for 6mm ww2. Preferably 1:1 scale and not overly complicated. Any idéas?

If you can wait for a couple of months GHQ will be posting WWII Microsquad on the website as a free download. I'm sorry but I can't give you an exact date but it should be before Christmas.

I belive Panzer War is also available for free.

Microsquad? Sounds interesting, will it be 1:1 rule system, I wonder? Anyone tried to convert GHQ-micro-rules to 1:1?

WWII Microsquad is an adapttaion of WWII MicroArmour to 1/1 scale. Tanks, softskins, larger mortars, and field guns will be represented individually. Infantry will be represented at squad level with support weapons such as HMGs representing two machineguns. The scale is 25 yards/inch and 1 minute of real time per turn. Although MicroSquad is based on the same general concepts as WWII Microarmor, there will be some significant differences. A new movement posture has been included, in which stands can move and fire in the same turn, albiet with limitations to both. Heavy Machinguns and other types of automatic weapons can be used to lay down a "Beaten Zone" to suppress any soft or personnel targets or, may engage in Standard Fire against a particular stand. Artillery impact markers will vary in size from 1" x 1" to 4" x 4", depending upon the caliber of artillery. There are several optional rules to allow more realism to the game, such as rules for weapons malfunctions, horse cavalry, unit determination, etc. TO&Es for seven different nations will be included in the initial release: U.S.A., Germany, U.S.S.R., Great Britian, France, Italy, Poland, and Japan. I am currently working on Orders of Battle and weapons data for Rumania, Hungary, and Finland. Those should be readty sometime next year.

hello

This sounds interesting my group likes the 1:1 scale much more than the larger scales of battle. I would say that would have to do with us mainly playing in larger scales 1/72 and larger. We do microarmor and have been looking for a good set of rules. Panzer war i like but have not got thru all the rules yet to play test with. GHQ is ok for larger scaled games. I guess what it boils down to is we as a group like more detail in our battles and tactical operations. Looking forward to checking out the new rules microgeorge is there a sneak peak you can post so we can get a glimpse at them?

I realize this is O-T because they are anything but free-
Old Dominion Games finally has their web site working, and we've been thinking about their WW-2 land rules. Anyone have any input/opinions on them?

I've been hearing about the GHQ 1:1 rules for a while now and really looking forward to them.

Check out their Vietnam book, that has some 1:1 rules in it.

Take a look at Heroes of Normandie by YC Games. You can find an overview at Boardgame Geek. But if you go to the YC site, they have a demo you can download. It's pretty simple to learn with lots of nice detail.

I've been playing with the ODGW (Old Dominion Gameworks) "Mein Panzer" rules for a few years now. Most of my AARs on this forum are of games using MP.

I like these rules. They have a very strong "realistic" feel to me, not quite so much on the technical aspects of battle (where Panzer War wins out over Mein Panzer) but on the flow of battle. The turn mechanism is what makes this game -- each player uses one "unit" (generally a platoon) per activation. This makes the game much more fluid, and forces gamers to think of their force in terms of an organization rather than a heard.

For a game that does it ALL on the technical aspects I recommend Panzer War. Not for beginners, though. A very complete ruleset -- a real tour-de-force on the questions of armor, facings, angles, and gun/ammo penetrations. Good as a referrence source even if you don't play the rules. Mobius' research and compilation is really remarkable.

The Mein Panzer rules don't qualify as free, nor even as inexpensive. The rules cost, and the databooks cost. Put together a reasonable set and you can easily wind up shelling out $70 or $80, and for everything maybe even $100 or more. It is good quality stuff, and there is an excellent support forum, but it ain't cheap.

Panzer War, on the other hand, is free. Really, truly free. Not just a teaser version -- the whole enchilada. And Mobius has a support forum too. He has been very responsive to any of my enquiries. Free is good. What a guy.

But alas, I was never able to get up to battalion sized engagements with Panzer War. The rules are just too complicated for that size of 1-to-1 force.

Mein Panzer plays faster. We have had battalion-sized engagements that played very well. But that is with multiple players each pushing only about a company plus some attachements. Mein Panzer is a particularly strong ruleset for multiple-players-per-side gaming, as the turn mechanics keep everyone involved.

I look forward to seeing the Microsquad rules. I'm always looking for rules at the unit scale of 1 model = 1 vehicle / 1 stand = 1 squad infantry.

Very interested in the GHQ Microsquad rules.

At our club we recently played the Squad Leader 'Guards Counterattack' scenario on an enlarged Squad Leader board with minis, and it was a blast. 8 blokes round a table having a great time with toy soldiers and a simple set of rules.

So anything in that vein gets our attention.

BattlerBritain: What rules were you using to play with on the enlarged Squad Leader boards? I have a set of those as well and I am looking for a good rules set to use with them...

Sorry for the late reply - only just seen this.

We used the original Squad Leader rules. They were great. Had all 8 guys in to the rules and really playing within 10 minutes. One of the best nights gaming we've had in years.
