Thanks Mauser and Mk1. I haven't had a chance to do a WWII game lately, so this was a welcome changeup.

Show Us Your Games

Post by pmskaar »

Hi Mark

Another great AAR with great pictures of your wonderful terrain and miniatures. I really appreciate the early war scenario - no Tigers or T-34's. I admit that my particular interest is currently in East Front and North Africa but your AAR makes the Polish campaign look very appealing. This is in the time when a 37mm gun has some real hitting power and the 20mm armed tanks and tankettes have some value as well. I have some Polish and early war German stuff that may get some attention one of these daysl Thanks very much.

I've been gaming for decades but have only just posted my first ever AAR on my humble blog at: http://6milphil.wordpress.com/2009/10/0 ... do-better/

I'm in two minds about AAR reports after this one, I like reading them of course especially when they're picture heavy however I found taking the photos did delay play, and rather pathetically a lot of my pictures turned out to be horribly blurred.

On the positive side it does show how you can have a reasonably sized game on a small dining table, such as the one above.

Shiloh and Fredricksburg

Here are a few shots of my 10mm ACW Games. The first three are of Fredricksburg set up for a game upcoming this weekend. The others are of Shiloh, which I ran at HMGS South Hurricon in late Sep.

I will post AARs after I get a few "game in progress" shots of Fredricksburg this weekend. Meantime, enjoy.

Nice 10mm ACW game, good looking, I really liked the snow/ice effect.
What did you use?

I used the RR Hobby "Foam Putty" and some chunks of foam. The foam chunks were white glued. Once all were dry I coated them with acrylic gloss varnish.

Another marvelous show! Wow, do all of your games take on an epic scale? I mean WOW you sure know how to go grand in small scales!

I love your approach. Your battles must really have a feel to them from the movement and the maneuvering through all that terrain.

I like that little cordouroy flield you have -- I've used cordouroy of that same color, but I think that putting the borders around the field makes a big difference. Something more to learn -- there's always something there in your game pics! 8)

Thanks MK1! My mantra has always been "terrain makes the game". I like to be able to look at a battlefield and immediately be able to identify the battle; at least when it comes to ACW. Once a year I put on a Civil War Weekend for our club (SMG in South Florida). Last year we did Hood's 1864 Tennessee Campaign. Next August 21-22 its Second Manassas. Once the terrain is done I shall also be able to use it for First Manassas of course. The Fredricksburg Terrain may also serve in a future Chancellorsville Weekend. I may need to make that multi-venue but it will be awesome as forces move from one area to the next and show up on each others flanks.

I have used Cordouroy in the past for this purpose but this time I went with paper fields from Woodlands Scenics. I think the are a bit easier to work with and they take much better to glue. Here is one more shot of the advancing masses of Union Troops. We had a CS victory 41-34 Victory Points this past weekend. They actually were moved off the wall on the second turn but the Union player elected to break through and was immediately pushed out. They never got that far again after a 20 turn event.

I said it once, and I'll say it again...Wow!

I usually go for a minimalist view on terrain, usually going for the topo look. It takes me so long to finish a formation of minis I don't have time or patience for putting toghete a great many terrain pieces...I just want to blow stuff up. :D

What formation level do you usually play at? It looks like brigade level, but it is a little hard to tell as I don't know the base scale.

Keep up the good work.

Scale

Ahoy there Panzerleader, the bases are 1 x 3/4" and the game used Fire & Fury Classic Brigade level game rules. Thanks gain for the compliment. In WWII games we like to blow stuff up too! However, for ACW we simply shoot holes in stuff. 8)

Ever done, I think it was, the Wilderness? Nothin' like fighting a battle in a #@%! old growth forest. That must be a headache, both for terrain and re fighting.

Wilderness

I have done only pieces of it. As a whole the battle was fought over the same terrain as Chancellorsville. However, it is not the most gaming-friendly battle of the war. Lots of entrenchments and woods make it tough on the attacker.

Hi Guys,

I played a Poland 44 scenario twice last week. First time was a walk over by the Russians. Pieter-Michiel moved around what little opposition was on the table. German reinforcements just refused to show up. Second time, we used a more variable Russian deployment and Hugewally actually got some of his Soviet forces shot at( and blown up)

I've always dreamed of doing the Wilderness as a double blind game at a convention. Let them go staggering around in the woods thinking they know where they are but randomly drifting on a master map.
