What are they for?
The stands look like they are slotted for five infantry, Micro Force rules call for ranks of four.
Can anyone shed some light?

I imagine they were designed before the rules were written because they are nothing to do with the game. However, you could use them if you wanted because they appear to be the right size (1") and in the rules the number of figures per stand is irrelevant.

That is exactly correct.
The little metal stands were made before the rules were written.
SJDonovan is correct, since the number of figures per stand is only suggested you could use them.
