In my tenure in the Guard (85-91) I saw many army aviation units come to Georgia for AT . I recall in 86 or 87 the 278th RAS from Tennessee came down with the old M model huey gunships . I do not know whether these were in the air cav troops or the attack helicopter companies. They also had the early model TOW Cobras with the miniguns on the chin and the rounded canopies. They also used OH-6 loaches as scouts instead of the Kiowas. My question is this........Were there any Guard attack helicopter battalions or air cav troops around after the creation of the AOE Combat Aviation Brigades that were still using the M model Huey attack birds ? There were none that I know of here in the southeast, but maybe other places. Logic tells me as the active duty battalions got the Apache , they casted the F model Cobras down to the Guard, who in turn , retired the M model hueys. But I may be wrong.
Also, when did the Guard retire the last Loaches? (not the Night stalker versions, but the good old Vietnam era OH-6 Alpha models)
