Yeah I just saw some Libyan rebel with a nice old gem. Looked like a pre 1800s musket or rifle.

Also the rebels' firing fundementals are horrible, but what can you expect from untrained civilians. Imagine what a Green Beret task force could do to get them a little more organized...

Its a sniper rifle, not a "sniper"! You don't call an assault rifle an "assault"!

Looks like the Brit SAS had a bit of a Boo Boo there the other day, escorting 'diplomatic staff'.HKurban wrote:Imagine what a Green Beret task force could do to get them a little more organized...
Sounds like the kind of mission you see in the movies, no wonder they got compromised.
Unusual for them.

I too have seen several images of "technicals" in the Libyan army.sfcmac wrote:Lol, I don't imagine the Libyan army is that much better! Saw a Technical this morning with what I think was a ZPU1 mounted in the bed.
It appears to me that most of the army is actually militias. Little better than the rebellion's forces in terms of organization and training, although perhaps with more lavish supply. Much of the fighting force on both sides is made up of various tribal factions rather than a coherent national army versus a unified "liberation front". The loyalist forces also include a fair quantity of mercenaries, of the dubious quality that Africa seems to be so able to supply.
I would expect that both sides have cadres of reasonably trained soldiers. A small portion of the current Libyan army attacks seem to be carried out by well-formed forces. Several complete units walked away from the regime, although I have not seen/heard if they remained as formed units after deserting. But the majority of available images of battles look more like the typical African militia gang stumble-around-and-posture-and-shoot-off-a-magazine type events.

Love the guy in the office chair with the FN-FAL. Libyan mechanized infantry?
Pretty good examples of how to paint technicals in the background.
Tactics are the opinion of the senior officer present.

The BBC have been showing some pictures of the Rebels using a captured T-72 with gill side armour, the tank painted all green.
They've also shown the Rebels using captured BMP-1s and some knocked out BMPs as well. One was burnt out positioned half-way through a wall surrounding a compound, and was probably trying to get in to an Army Barracks.
I also caught a glimpse of a knocked out green+sand Shilka, a line of about 20 green+sand T-72s and another green T-72 that was possibly knocked out as the rear road-wheels were a light grey colour, possibly from fire. It was also parked next to a burnt-out Technical.
Caught a glimpse of a grey painted Su-24 early on in the campaign that looks as if it took about 6 days and 6+ attempts to put a single bomb on a massive arms dump, which went very sky high when they finally hit it. One mission a day seems like they're really pulling the stops out there guys!

Saw a burnt out BTR 60, the same Shilka previously mentioned, a couple of BMP-1s and lots of ZPU-1's and 4's on the CBS news last night.
It seems the T-54/55 was the Communist icon armored vehicle of the Cold War. It appears the Toyota Tacoma is the icon for the GWOT and these Arab "revolts". Imagine what Col. Lawrence could have done taking Aqaba in a Tacoma with a DSHK mount in lieu of a camel.

Poor training and equipment aside, you have to admire people who are still willing to put it on the line against "regular" forces in the hope of having a better life.

I admire individuals who put their lives at risk in the hope of improving the lives of their compatriots, but the lack of skill and discipline evokes a totally different emotion.
Also, history teaches us that in the great majority of 'popular revolutions' the ultimate result is totalitarian repression of liberty by the winners, genocide of some scapegoat population, and/or chaotic anarchy in which all the survivors suffer.
Is anyone willing to bet that any of the countries of North Africa and the Near East currently in an unstable condition will NOT wind up with a corrupt government dominated by a clique or tribe and dedicated to the enrichment of a few by ravishment of the majority?

Don,
You're right about all of that of course. No country anywhere has completely escaped that fate, even this one. But, hope springs eternal that they will better themselves if even just a little.

BM-21 seen launching a volley of rockets. I think it was Qadaffi loyal but I'm not sure. Either way, I'd hate to be the guys on the receiving end of that.

Good BBC review of the kit being used on both sides:
