1/2400 Decals

Post by groundlber »

Excellent work, everyone. It gives me an itch to get back into 1/2400 Naval. Lead addiction, whenever you think you have kicked the habit, something brings you back.

Several individuals have been looking for aircraft carrier deck decals for Micronauts. There is a source for these; Pomroy Productions is the name of the company. I won't post a direct link, but any search engine will get you there with the company name.

Their major interest is decals for Star Trek universe models, but they also make decals for 1/2400 scale WWII ships. Their catalog lists the following:
- US carrier deck numbers & stripes and DKM air recognition markings
- US fleet carrier decks (complete decks for 13 different ships - Lexington, Saratoga, Ranger, Yorktown, Enterprise, Wasp, Hornet, 2 x short-deck Ess*x, 2 x long-deck Ess*x, 2 x Independence class)
- Japan fleet carrier decks (Akagi, Kaga, Soryu, Hiryu, Zuiho, Shoho, Junyo, Hiyo, Shinano, Unryu, Amagi, Katsuragi, Kasagi)
- US light and escort carrier decks (not illustrated yet)
- Italian & German air recognition markings (not illustrated yet)
- 'Coming Soon' British, German, & Italian carrier decks (specifically for GHQ)

Note: GHQ does not make a model of Unryu class (Unryu, Amagi, Katsuragi, & Kasagi). GHQ does make US Midway class and Japanese Ryujo, Shokaku, Zuikaku, & Taiho; which are not covered by Pomroy Productions.

I don't collect carrier models (I'm interested primarily in surface warfare). If you get one of the Pomroy Productions products, please make a posting in the Micronauts Only forum with a product review.

First the decals are sized for Panzerschiffe models so beware there may be size differences. OK, there will be size differences.

Secondly there is this
I purchased an ALPs printer, but it was damaged in shipping. As a result, I had to be more creative in producing white decals. My decals are printed with a hi res color laser printer on clear decal paper. The ships are primed and painted gloss white, then I apply the decals using decal setting and decal softening solutions. For more details, check out my website: snip url.

Paul,

Any progress on your TAGOS? I actually wrote up a H4 scenario using one, and thought it would be fun to play it out.

Sadly, no real progress. The kids are off for summer vacation so my time is mostly being a taxi service. I worked pretty close with them while I was in Japan so I would love to see your scenario sometime.

I couldn't agree more. I would also like to see some of the other PLAN frigates that have been sold to other Pacific Rim navies. I think the best bet at this stage is to vote early and vote often with the folks at VF and tell them what you want, they're expanding their lines apparently.
I just spoke with the shop owner for a maker of custom miniatures at Shapeways.com (shop name: Objects May Appear), and he says that since it's all in 3D CAD and done by 3D printing, he can scale anything he has, including Jangwei II FF, Houbei PTM, Type 071 LPD, and the Iranian Moudge FF, into 1/2400. I'm hoping to find out what else he may have coming out.

Now for the disclaimer - I have a feeling these are slightly above Panz in quality, since we're talking resin models, but it is out there for anyone to check out.

My guess is that the "block" of containers would need to have fairly square edges... or maybe file off the molded-in block and add your own from sheet styrene or somesuch... Then use your computer and a paint program to draw / color the individual containers, print on decal paper, and apply.
I found these drawings...thought someone might be able to use them if they wanted to make some decals for the containers...

Thanks Steve for bringing out the option. I've a look in there and I'm interested to find out that they actually have someone creating Type 054A, 053H (Jangwei II) FF and Type 071 LPD in 1:6000 scale. It'll be great if 1:2400 scale is also available (I know that will be more than doubling the amount of work to design in that scale). It's too bad I have no knowledge of 3D Autocad stuffs. As you have spoken to the owner, is he actually about that get your listed items in 1:2400 scale? I'll be the next customer in line if they are available anywhere.

This is his post from theminiaturespage.com forum:
Hello all,

Thanks for all the interest, and all the schematics for new ships. Keep 'em coming!

My current 'to do' list is:
+ Mistral
+ La Fayette
+ Shirane-class JMSDF
+ UK f230
+ Zumwalt
- FREMM
+ PLAN Type 022
- F70 Leygues Frigate
- RN Maestrale
+ JMSDF Hyuga
+ Dokdo class LPD/LPH
+ KDX-II Destroyer
- KDX-I
+ KDX-III Destroyer
+ JMSDF Mursame
+ JMSDF DDG-177
- JMSDF Kongou

Please tell me if I've missed anything.

KNOSSOS – since you asked, I can start doing ships in 1:3000 scale as well as 1:6000 and 1:2400.
So you can see he's going to have some new stuff coming out, and he is specifying scales now on his shop. He's got the PLAN Type 022 PTM and the UK Type 45 FFG, with lots coming soon. As for workload, once he has drawings for a ship, it's all a matter of scaling it down in 3D, since it's all done by 3D printing.

I've placed some comments on his 1/6000 071 LCAC drawing this morning, and suddenly, a couple of hours later, he came back with the corrections on a higher accuracy drawing and now it's even available in 1/2400 scale! I'm thrilled! :D

I'm quite pleased with his production so far. It is a nice complement to the GHQ modern line. Not up to the quality, but he has produced 7 miniatures in his 1/2400 line:
JMSDF Hyuga LPD
French LaFayette FF
PLAN Type 071 LPD
PLAN Type 022 PTM
UK Type 23 FF
UK Type 45 FFG
Russian Krivak FF

If I were to compare quality, they are slightly higher quality than Panzerschiffe, but that is without looking at models in my hand - from looking at pictures.

I wouldn't. The picture of the Krivak .... it's only vaguely a Krivak. The Type 23 looks good but it isn't a picture of the model, it's a picture of the schematic. When he has a model it might be OK... or not. The Tarantul is good but it's in 1/600 I think. If it was in 1/2400 I'd buy it. The schematic of the Hyuga looks good but I'll wait for a picture of the actual product.

If you want a Type 45 in 1/2400 Seawulf makes one. It has the usual Seawulf problems, oversized weapons especially the 4.5 inch gun, but otherwise it's OK. If Superior oversized weapons don't bother you then you'll like the Seawulf.
