Bezmozgu7 - I also enjoy the terrain you and your friend put together for your games. I particularly love the way you've painted your buildings. Question: you said above that your friend Ben used a canvas terrain mat. Is this a commercial mat or was this home made from artists canvas?

Begemot -- I believe it is a terrain mat from the now defunct Terrain Guy enterprise. I don't know what type of canvas the Terrain Guy used, but Ben does a great job contouring low rolling hills by laying out rags underneath to provide some dead space for maneuver and slightly higher elevations for observation. The canvas mat conforms more smoothly and evenly over the slight buildup of the rags than it does over say a 1/2-inch section of Styrofoam board.

I defer to Ben who is on this forum to confirm the supplier of his canvas terrain mat.

Bezmozgu7,
Definitely a great looking table! Your collection of terrain pieces lets 6mm gaming shine.

Greetings,
I finally got around to editing some pics of a 6mm IABSM game we played last month. I had some friends up from Florida and one of them was hoping to do a Russian Front game with his M3 Grants. So I threw together a smallish Kursk scenario involving a couple of companies of M3s with tank riders trying to recapture recently overrun village. The Germans had only some recce units and a battery of StuGs.
I wanted to recreate some of the rolling terrain that was in the southern section of the Citadel operation.

A few years ago I made a flickr set on setting up tables.
I am really going for a cheap, easily transportable way to do decent looking terrain. Not a detailed as permanent boards, but able to show various terrain types with some depth and texture.

Hi Mark

That is another great looking game with some more unusual equipment in use. Thanks for sharing. I always look forward to your AARs.

So played my first ww2 naval game last week. I have played a lot of different games before so war gaming is not new to me. I have to say that I found naval warfare a lot of fun and I plan to play a lot more in the future. We played US vs Japanese with 1 battleship, 2 heavy cruisers, 1 light cruiser and 6 destroyers on each side.

I didn't get pics of the whole game but the US Navy won.

We used Victory at Sea and I liked the rules but the ship listing were very limited. I would like to buy GHQ's naval rules to see which set I enjoy more and which has a better ship listing. There are not really a lot of rules out there. Can anyone comment about it? I only plan to play US vs Japanese so how large is the ship listing in GHQ's rules? Do they atleast have data for all the models they sell?

If you're not already aware, Victory at Sea has an expansion called "Order of Battle" which adds a large amount of new ships for all navies plus extra nations. It updates the rules for aircraft in significant ways too. It's as thick as the original rule book.

I haven't tried out GHQ's rules myself.

For GHQ rules go to FRESTUFF of this site. Under WWII Micronaut you will find the data cards (Bonus supplement) and the scenarios included in the rules.

Actually there are a lot pf WWII naval rules around, a few well known other less and with diffrent level of details and complexity.

If you make a search wiith "naval wargames rules" you will have a lot of results.

I can give the rules I use. They are in the order I learned them which is also the order of complexity:
Victory at sea (and Age of Dreadnoughts)
GHQ Micronaut
General Quarters
Seekrieg

Even if outside your period note that all of them with the exceptio of GHQ, can be used for WWI.

For a real classic, try to find a copy of Fletcher Pratt's Naval Wargame.

I have the Order of Battle supplement and that still leaves me with only 3 US destroyer classes. What I am interested in doing is playing Pre Pearl Harbor battles. So that leaves me with only the Gridly class and I think only 4 were in the Pacific.

I just looked at the GHQ free stuff and I'm very impressed with all the ships. I will be ordering the rules this week. Can anyone tell me how much different GHQ's rules are compared to VaS?
