Modern Naval Hull Numbers

Post by jbaker »

I am building "modern" (1990s-25 years ago!) naval force and have some questions:
1) What decals do people use for hull numbers? I did some searching and found deck decals, but some of the pictures in the GHQ catalog have numbers that are pretty obviously decals. I would think that Micro Armor decals would be a bit large.

2) While US ships seem to keep the same number throughout the life of the ship, I have been unable to find a consistent pattern for Soviet surface forces. Pictures on the internet often show the same named ship with different numbers. While this just be might mislabeling, there doesn't seem to be a consistent list. Does anyone have a good source for this?

To answer #2 first. The Soviets did change hull numbers from time to time. I don't have anything approaching a list but my recommendation is just pick one from available photos. For my Soviets I have used the GHQ WWII German tactical numbers in white. I have had to cut out individual numbers and piece them together at times but it can work.

For the US I use SeaBat decal, don't bother searching they've been out of business for more than a decade, which sold decal sheets by class with all the hull numbers for that class in white, white-gray shadowed, and dark gray. I still have some so if you have US ships to do I may be able to help you out.

For other navies that have used or still use hull numbers with letter prefixes I haven't found an acceptable decal yet.

Hope that helps.

I have several US ships in the queue that could use numbers.
3 x Bunker Hill
1 x Knox
1 x O.H. Perry
1 x CVN Roosevelt
1 x Iowa
If you have hull numbers for these, 'twould be appreciated. I will get some German tactical numbers for the Russkies.

Do you have a particular unit in mind for these ships?

My basement got flooded Christmas Eve day but I think my decal box was above the waterline. There was only 2-3 inches of standing water and most things were on wooden pallets to keep them off the floor so I think it is all okay. I'll have time to check tomorrow and I'll pm you for an address once I have the decals in order.

Paul,

You have a pump setup at that house in the basement? If not, go get one off a carrier. That should keep it dry even in a hurricane.

There is a pump, which the property manager assured us would work, even in a hurricane. For whatever reason the pump failed to turn on. Luckily the previous tennant left a buch of pallets behind and I had the forethought to use them. The property manager said the pump has been fixed. We'll see.

Okay, I've got your decals all set. I have everything except the A.B. Flt II, Texas, Belknap, and Bainbridge. PM me with your mailing address.
