Dichotomy of GHQ Micronaut IJN Destroyers -- now with Kagero

Post by saxophone »

I admit that until I went through this exercise, I didn't the know the differences between the various IJN destroyer classes. I acquired a large number of already assembled and mostly painted IJN destroyers as part of a large lot of GHQ models. So I decided to create a system of yes/no questions to help me identify the GHQ models.

I'm sharing it in the hopes someone will catch any errors and that someone may find this useful.

GHQ IJN DD Class Identification
1. 1 funnel?
Yes, goto 2
No, goto 3.
2. Additional small AA guns abreast of the bridge?
Yes, Suzutsuki, IJN7.
No, Akitsuki, IJN6.
3. All main gun mounts have 1 gun each?
Yes, Kamikaze, IJN21.
No, goto 4.
4. 2 main double gun mounts and 1 main single gun mount?
Yes, goto 5.
No, goto 6.
5. 2 quad torpedo mounts and substantial tripod mast aft of superstructure?
Yes, Shiratsuyu, IJN13.
No, Hatsuharu, IJN38.
6. 3 triple torpedo mounts?
Yes, Fubuki, IJN22
No, goto 7.
7. Second mast forward of aft turrets?
Yes, Yugumo, IJN5.
No, Asashio, IJN20.

Hey...that looks right. Pretty cool observation on the Jap DDs. Thanks for sharing.

Given none of the myriad experts has objected I will use it. I don't know much about these and it's much easier than looking at lots of pictures.

Thanks!

I'm glad this is useful to others.

GHQ is set to release a Kagero model soon. Once I get my hands on one, I'll update the dichotomy to include it.
