As usual, not that simple. It will depend on the vehicle you are painting. Germany moved to dark yellow to replace panzer grey, but at later stages camo was factory applied. Any vehicle made during that period would not have left the factory is plain dark yellow. Further, at a later date again, base colour shifted to olive green due to shortages of the dark yellow pigments. Jagdpanthers seem to fall in this group, so mine are base olive green with dark yellow stripes (it's about ratios, and wheel colours). Ambush schemes were factory applied.

As to whether vehicles fought in just yellow, yes they did but again it depended on circumstance. Does the crew have time and resources to paint the vehicle? Do they see a need (Russia in Summer or winter, maybe not... btw, painting a tank in the Russian winter would be a challenge and a half). I can only offer one example, and that's off the top of my head; a Jagdtiger unit with I think 5 vehicles was pretty well documented, and I seem to recall mention that one of the 5 was still in overall dark yellow when it was captured.

Thanks for the information above. Like I said, I have seen some colored prints depicting them but wanted to know if it was historically accurate. I love painting the more common camo patterns and there is plenty out there to keep someone busy for a long time. However, i do like the odd ball schemes. I love having in my collection a platoon of vehicles painted in a color that was rare. If I ever get to use my stuff in a game, I think it would be cool having a platoon of tigers or panthers in exlusive dark yellow if it was actually used. I think what you wrote validated that unless I missed read. The look of 10 or 20 tanks all dressed up in traditional camo and having a platoon that looked like it just rolled off the rails is fun to me. That is if it actually happen that way.

That is really great work on those Panthers. The camo patterns look very good and the tanks seem to have really good weathering effects.

Is that actually a Zimmerit pattern on these? They look excellent and a very nice touch I must say.

Thanks for your kind remarks on the Panthers.

I did score the hull and turret sides with an Exacto-knife to simulate zimmerit. Its easy to do and adds a little something to the models. It also helps hide mold seam lines, which with these castings were pretty bad. (Note to GHQ: this is an area where a QA focus would be well spent.)

I use a brush for all painting, start to finish. I gave up on using an air brush some time ago. I have more control with a brush. I use oils. One of the benefits of using slow drying paint is you can apply paint and get a soft edge if that is the effect you want.

Those look really great. Your shading and highlighting are very effective.

The only thing I could possibly suggest is to paint the tracks a dark brown or rusty brown, highlight with silver and coat/highlight mud+dust over the wheels and tracks.

Great work on those T-34/76s. Very nice wash and drybrush technique that makes the details pop out without being overdone. I can tell the subtle difference in the brown exhaust and track color as well. Excellent!
