IJN DD Kagero vs. Yugumo

Post by saxophone »

As part of the recent GHQ sale, I picked up the new IJN Kagero class DDs. I'd like to update my Dichotomy of IJN Destroyers to include the new Kagero model.

Well, after painting my new Kageros, I placed them next to my Yugumo models. I can't tell them apart. :?

Can someone please point out the most recognizable differences between the two models?

Thanks.

I don't have the Kagero model yet, but take a look at the front of the bridge.
The bridge on Kagero was "straight up" while the Yugumo had a noticeable "slope aft" to it.
Yugumo had a heavier tripod and the main guns had more elevation, but I doubt if either would show on the model...?

I'm not seeing the slope aft in the pictures of the Yugumo class that I've found on the internet. Can you find an example of what you are referring to?

Try this-
www.aeronautic.dk/MarineArt145.htm
Look at the structure below the bridge windows; seems to have a definite slope as opposed to the Kagero.
Text elsewhere says the Yugumo bridge structure was designed to be more streamlined than Kagero...

I wrote to GHQ and asked what the differences are between the two models. Here is their response.

Thank you for your interest in our products! As you have noted the actual
ships were very similar, and our models are very similar. If you look near
the rear on each side there is a small deck that is about 1/2" long that is
lower than the main deck, and there are portholes on it. There are also
some portholes designed into both sides near the front of the ship. You can
see these details pretty clearly in our website photo:

Let's see if this works:

Yugumo:

Kagero:

You can see that the after deckhouse is longer on the Kagero vs. the Yugumo class. There are other subtle fit differences but, that's the most significant difference.

IJN DD Kagero vs. Yagumo

It is good to see the differences side by side. I just got a pack of Kageros recently and will try to get them painted up one of these days.

By the way, the picture showing the painted Yagumo was a model done by me a number of years ago for the catalog. I also did the Fubuki, Matsu, and Akitsuki as well. This must have been at least 10 years ago and probably longer.

And a nice paint job it is indeed!

(Did you paint the smoke as well? )

Hi Starcruiser

I provided the painted model only. The wake effects and smoke are all done through the magic of photographic effects.

The Asashio is also one of mine as well.

I should be able to complete my IJN Destroyer dichotomy to include the Kagero with this information.
