Still Looking for GHQ M60A2s

Post by panzergator »

I'm still looking for 11 GHQ (GHQ only) M60A2s. Cama and Chrisswim were very generous in finding as much as they could. So generous, in fact, that they found enough to complete a second battalion minus 11 tanks. While I can use Brand X tanks to complete the second battalion, I would prefer to have the complete set of GHQ models. If you have any leads, please let me know. They need not have main gun barrels. Would prefer, but it isn't required, that they have the cupolas.

I am also looking for 34 M60 "turtlebacks," the original M60, with the M48-like turret. Since I model US battalions, I am aiming for an example of each post-WWII tank battalion TOE. I may stop with the J-series, since I don't agree with the combined arms battalions currently in fashion. Hell, I don't even agree with moving the Armor School to Fort Knox, but that's just an old guy digging in his heels about change, right?

Don't worry if the main gun is broken. I can fix that. I can order cupolas and hulls, too. Main interest is the M60 turret. Yes, they ARE DIFFERENT from the M48 turrets.

Perhaps it would help you part with your A2s if I remind you that, although the Shillelagh was supposedly accurate to 3000 meters for a 90% hit probability, other difficulties reduced this seeming advantage. Target acquisition at that range with the optics available could be difficult and the cantankerous nature of the system hindered reliability. Although it had a conventional round, its maximum effective range was only 1500 meters. Only HEAT rounds were available. The basic load was only 43 rounds, of which 13 were missiles. You are much better off with your M60A1s if upgraded to Rise/Passive (AOS) standard or M60A3s - more effective round, greater basic load, better sights. And no cycling of the breech, no closed-breech scavenging system to worry about,

The external markers for M60A1 (RISE/Passive)(AOS) consists of top-loading air cleaner boxes and grenade launchers mounted on the front third of the turret either side of the main gun, so you can just designate all your M60A1s as upgraded models, but perhaps your grenade launchers haven't arrived through the supply system yet.. The tanks will be in MERDC camo, as they almost all were formerly painted in the USAREUR four-color sand base, with brown, green, and black embellishments.

Then again, maybe you just like 'em..

Can you provide pics of what you are wanting? I have some M60's but I think they are probably A3's. Have not done anything with them at this point. They are targeted for my Marines.

Don't have a photo ready at hand. GHQ no longer makes the M60A2. Brand X makes it, but the GHQ model resembles the real thing much more accurately. This tank has virtually the same gun as the M551 Sheridan - short barrel, gun/missile launcher. Thank you, but the tanks you have earmarked for your Marines should go to them. Since the M103 heavy tank, Marines have historically used M60A1, M60A1 with add-on armor, and the M1-series. If you just search on "M60A2 tank," the internet will provide plenty of pics.

How is the move going?

I haven't forgotten I owe you a copy of a student text from Fort Knox. Printer is up and running. Just have to figure out how to do it.

Move went well. Still adjusting to the schedule so have not painted much. I will see what M60's I have this weekend and if I have any A2's I'll let you know.

Paul, this is a copy from the MicroArmor Mayhem site of some of his M60A2s. Note the short barrel and the different, "low profile," turret. contrasted to the high profile cupola and the searchlight mounted on the left side arm..

Sorry it took so long to post this. There have been a lot of distractions here.

The Gator State of Mind is in receipt of three M60A2s all the way from Australia, a very appreciated contribution to 3-33 Armor. Thank you, CDP.

Hey Panzer,

I apologize that I have not checked the M60's. Now that I see the pic I will take a look and see what I have. Of course if I have any, they might have to go to the Bulldogs versus the Gators.

Regards,

Paul

Thanks, Paul. I was out of the net in Gainesville for a reunion, anyway.

Go Gators!

I have ten. Unfortunately they are all missing their main gun barrels (poor luck one move). They have the cupolas and those guns survived! The cupolas are glued to the turrets but the turrets are loose. They are painted in Euro scheme from the '80s. They probably date from the late '70s or very early '80s. The areas between the road wheels has the period build up of material as opposed to the clear appearance shown above. If interested PM me and I will send pictures. Thank you.

Junk auction of micro armor.

Post by chrisswim »

I was able to pick up the ebay auction of micro armor 'junk'. Who of you bid against me? Had to pay up. 3 MCV-80 hulls, 6 M-2 Bradley hulls, 2 M-2 Bradleys, 1 Chieftain hull, 1 Leopard 1 hull, 1 CinC Leopard 1A4 missing barrel, 5 Abrams hulls, 1 AH64, and a UH-1 Huey.
Paul, quit picking on us Gators. Is that why they kicked you out of Gainesville to Orlando to be with Micky?

Sorry, I haven't been around the last couple days.

chrisswim, PM sent. Paul has very kindly provided me those M60A2s, so I believe his heart is in the right place. After just attending a reunion right before Thanksgiving there, I doubt leaving Gainesville was a choice.

Madman, PM sent.

Paul, working on the student text.

Paul,

Given that game against Bama in Atlanta, it is obvious that the Gators are sorely in need of a tank platoon...
