Akatsuki _ small class of 4 destroyers of the special type which saw service around Guadal-** CENSORED **. I really hope GHQ makes a four pack of these important DDs soon.

Kagero

As a child my father bought me a 1/700 scale model of the Shiranuhi and my love of the IJN was born.

Favorite Japanese Destroyer

While I don't have a particular favorite, I will also say Kagero because that tends to be the most famous of the Japanese Destroyer classes.

I painted several of the Japanese destroyers that are in the catalog. I don't know who is on tap to paint the Kagero but I will be happy to do it if nobody else is.

By the way, GHQ used to package their Yugumo as a Kagero a long time ago. Just a bit of trivia there.

Has to be Fubuki - since the very first model (1/700th Tamiya) I bought of any IJN destroyer was that one specific ship...

Fubuki class.
Even If nothing else, because it was the first of the new type DD's.

Despite their flaws (top-heavy, expensive etc..), they changed destroyer design forever.

The typical destroyer in the 1920's was pretty much like the British V&W class. 1200-1400 tons, 4x 4-5 inch guns in single mounts, half a dozen modest torpedoes etc...

Everyone had to rethink their destroyer designs to some extent once the Fubuki class started showing up.

Akizuki

Post by LAX_Kev »

I'm a big fan of heavily-gunned ships - so my vote for my favorite IJN Destroyer class is for the AKIZUKI class (GHQ models IJN-6 and -7). True, they lack the trademark multiple torpedo launchers that are central to the IJN's thoughts on offensive destroyer tactics, but one does have to wonder how well these heavily gunned ships would have performed during some of the short-range night brawls in the Solomon Islands campaigns.

Akizuki : Originally intended as anti-aircraft ships but were completed as general purpose destroyers

Shiratsuyu Class

I chose Shiratsuyu only because of Shigure, the "unsinkable" ship (almost) which survived several battles under Capt. Tameichi Hara. Check out the book he wrote of his time in the navy during WWII, it is a great read.

But come on, how can you not love them all!?!

True.
Thought about the Shigure too; I first read Hara's book then I was a "teen".
Fascinating. Catchy name too- "Autumn Rain" as I recall.
But the Fubuki's "led the way" to the new cans, so I picked that one.
I like them all too, even the old "WW-1 style" stuff.
My uncle (gone a couple years now) never could understand my interest in the IJN; too much hate.
He was on the USS Kimberly all war; other than when in hospital and she was being patched up-after Okinawa I think it was...
