Any interest in the new rules, Rommel?

Post by Extra Crispy »

Rommel are a new set of rules for operational level gaming - I expect my stock for the shop this week. Each stand is a company, and the game uses squares (or hexes). Each square being 1km. Obviously a good fit with 6mm and maybe hexes? I know a lot of lads here use the GHqQ hexes. I've got a big table's worth of Hexon (the pre-made hex terrain from the UK). So I'm thinking of getting in some really BIG games using my 6mm stuff.

Not a game for the "check for hit location" crowd, but I've always been more interested in operational/grand tactical gaming anyway.

I like the theme and scale of it but I'm not sure about the game itself.

I've read some of the preamble and downloaded the QRS and other stuff off the website but it seems a bit 'not-quite-right'.

It'll probably be entertaining to play but I'm used to games like GBWW2 and Spearhead where there's a bit of substance behind the values used for armour and attack strengths etc.

Rommel doesn't give me that kind of vibe. The use of cards for special attributes that you can play once at a decisive moment also makes me wonder if this is a card game or a miniatures game.

It also seems very similar to a set of rules published in Miniature Wargames about a year ago by a games club in Vienna. That was pretty good, had values I could relate to, used a 1km grid as well and didn't use cards.

So I'm going to wait for a bit before delving.

Hmm, I wasn't aware of any cards in play. The cards I saw were just "unit stat" cards. Like Team Yankee does now. As far as I know there are no cards needed for play in the final game? Usually if his games use cards he sells those too - no such product or downlaod here.

Yep, I'll be giving them a try. I've downloaded the PDF version of the rules and they look right up my alley. I've enjoyed his operational/grand-tactical level rules for other periods.

There are no cards required for play. The only cards are unit stat cards which double as a kind of 'blind' for hidden deployment, and a unit label in play (under the minis). But you don't need them - you can use hit markers or a roster if you prefer. The strategies referred to in an earlier post are army-specific and are in the lists (not cards). So by virtue of knowing the other player's army type, you'll know what special abilities/stratagems he'll have to play. No card based lucky surprises there.

Bought the rules and have been reading them. So far I like what I've read. With the summer sale now on, will probably purchase some more figures.

Okay, I gave them a quick read through. I think they are just what I need for my long term project, gaming The Battle of the Bulge.

I found a print and play game called "Winter Thunder." If I use my Kallistra hexes I can fit the map on my 6x9 table. Now I just need to convert the OOB from the game (one counter = 1 division or brigade) to something that works with Rommel. I'm thinking 1 regiment = 1 unit. So that gives me about 9 units/division. A Panzer has two tanks, 3 PzGren, artillery, etc. So about 250 German units and 250 US, give or take, with about 50 British.

I'm worried however that even with 4 or 5 players per side there is just too much stuff for them to move and keep track of.

Still, really liking what I'm reading for this level game. Plus it has a fun "SAGA" like commadn board that makes you think about what you plan to do this turn and commit resources accordingly.

Love to hear how it went after you played it - pros and cons etc. also whether it would work well with GHQ hexes. I'm into grander operational scale but just assumed there wasn't much out there compatible with the ghq hex system?

Will easily work with hexes instead of squares. I'm using the Kallistra hexes. Will probably set up a solo scenario and fiddle with that to start,
