Just been reading through the posts on this thread and thought I'd posted before, but haven't.
I did have a good read of Mark1's post: I feel your pain with just about every rule set you listed Dood.
And I think I've played every rule set mentioned here so far.
I've tried 1:1, and have the figure collections to go with it, but find I'm doing tabletop to fight parts of a bigger battle or a clash in a Campaign.
So I'm doing platoon level games a lot.
I have Spearhead, Modern Spearhead, FFOT3, Kalt Kriege Ohne Hass, NQM and boardgame rules for that level and all have pluses and minuses.
Some work great for tanks, some work great for infantry, some are an accountants dream (lists everywhere) but I've ended up just picking the bits of rules I like.
I like FFOT3 tank rules: they're surprisingly accurate and quick.
For infantry I like Squad Leader: it's simple and quick and has a good flavour to them, but they are Squad based not platoon based.
And I love the boardgame Air&Armor for just a cracking way to game a Campaign. It's simple, streamlined and gets the player thinking of what they're going to do not how to get the game mechanics to work.
So I use a bit of each of those.
I also try and simplify the game down.
As Mark said for Challenger, you've tables linked to tables with sub-tables and even more tables, but why do you need all those?
Look at the results, do the Maths (with an S), work out the stats, reduce it and give the effects in one roll.
I've examined the stats for FFOT3 tank rules and the results seem pretty close to actual.
I've compared the chance-of-hit stats and they're ok and the effects of hits also seem close to the few results I can quote against, namely using Binomial Theorem with the FFOT3 Hit effects against quoted chance of damage effects from WW2 (Churchill vs 50mm, 75mm and 88mm).
It's good enough to give a good game and quick enough to play it.
But a game is only as good as how many times you play it.
If you like it and you play it a lot then it's good for you. That's all that counts.
Hope this helps,
B
