Consolidated 1/285 Wish List

I am pleasantly surprised that the World War II Italians are receiving, relatively speaking, so many votes (like 3). I think it would be great expansion to the World War II offerings. It seems like the minor nations have a very thin bench (in term of existing offerings) whereas offerings for the major players are starting to get into very limited/one off type of units ... don’t get me wrong I like those units but I prefer more choices with the minor nations.

Yes - it's interesting to look at the votes so far. My thoughts are :

- Only 18 people have voted, which is a little disappointing.
- I put a note on the Facebook page referencing this forum and there were no extra votes that came in as a result.

- Nothing in Cold War/Vietnam has more than 1 vote and the items wanted are less mainstream so that leads me to conclude that these gamers are generally happy with the existing offerings. There's some love for expanding the Middle East wars ranges but the rest seems to be for deepening a particular nation's T&OE which may well be damned in practice by the the economics of production, except for US forces.

- I can't see GHQ producing 1/285 spacecraft - they would just be too expensive as they are just too big.

- Ultra-Modern is always a little different as countries are bringing out new vehicles all the time. A lot of the votes here for new equipment for the major armies seem a dead cert for GHQ to produce over the next few years and I can't see anything that probably isn't a good candidate on that list. (after all, if GHQ will produce a Zombie pack, even my vote for Yak-mounted infantry stands a chance and people do love novelty units!).

- W47 seems a bit of a dead duck these days but I could see the Conqueror and Korean war stuff having some mileage, as well as some of the aircraft.

- WW2 has a lot of mileage left with plenty of vehicles and aircraft yet to be produced. Some aircraft and ships are clearly far too large for 1/285 (both in scale and cost) and there is strong competition on the ship side these days so that affects the likelihood of production. Obviously there is a very strong market for US forces and the Shermans discussion shows that there is a market for a great depth of detail that perhaps you wouldn't get when discussing T-34 variants, for example. The demand for smaller nation's forces continues - I think the attraction here is that they are different and that they are more manageable as you need less types of vehicles and a smaller quantity to build up a representative force.

I think it's also worth commenting on what isn't there :

WW2 Pacific theatre doesn't seem popular and I put that down to there being a less interesting range of vehicles and it being more of an infantry war (which probably lends itself more to larger scales). It isn't just a US thing either as I don't see votes for Australian vehicles etc.

I'm surprised GHQ has steered away for the 'Engineer' Infantry packs for WW2 for so long - these seem an obvious omission to add interest for wargaming and competitors are into these units in a big way due to the fundamental impact they have on combat. Equally, Churchill 'funnies' are an odd exclusion for the same reason. GHQ has done a great job filling out support vehicles like supply and engineering trucks in recent years so I feel that engineers have got to be coming soon. The Russian heavy artillery tractors also seem like they are long overdue based on recent trends.

Anyway, encourage your friends to vote and feel free to switch your votes as new projects occur to you!

When I am realistic, about the only thing I expect to see from my list is, MAYBE, the M48A1. It requires a new hull with back deck grills, but can use the A1 turret. As you observed, however, the '47 series was a fad that has passed.

Perhaps the M1 tank turret test bed could come in as a counter to the Armata. I'm ready to give up on the rest. I don't see GHQ willingly giving up on that awful M577 w/track extension and giving us a real one and the rest of my wishes are likely too esoteric. Not worth their time.

There may be a wave of next -generation combat vehicles coming out and GHQ is probably going to respond to that rather than make any prototype-only stuff. I will likely delete it all after this year. I have plenty to spend money on as it is

Couldn’t agree more CG, the ww2 engineering packs seem like a huge omission. It is striking Because I assume they would sell well. Same with Marines from nations other than US...

I think you hit the nail on the head with the Pacific - largely infantry battles with what I think would be difficult terrain to produce for the war gaming table.

As to the votes, why don’t we set up a system like trading carbon credits? I’d gladly give my modern vote to done for their neglected ww2 vote... haha

Not complaining GHQ, just greedy for more.

I have deleted several items from my wish list because there is little chance of GHQ making them. They didn't go into production.

I left on the M48A1. It was in production and was fielded. This is not the Israeli ERA model. There are significant differences between the A1 and later models. The most obvious is the grilled back deck, which was replaced by a solid one in later models. You can't see the A1's limited range (70 miles), the gas engine, and the stereoscopic rangefinder (both lenses n the turret sides moved to determine range, which was dicier to use than the coincidence (not one lense moved). Those are some significant differences which might affect game play. The later, solid back deck was intended to reduce infra-red heat signature from the engine. The stereoscopic rangefinder was more difficult to use, especially if the commander wore glasses, than the coincidence one. The A2 and later featured larger fuel capacity and diesel engines, which increased range.

Hi madman, this thread is an experiment to try and focus the wish list to more effectively lobby GHQ. If it works, we'll try it again next year, if not....

You can add votes at any time but if you list more than 5 in a category, I'll only record the last 5. If you list 2 now and then add another 4, I'll drop the first one of the two originals, keep the second and add the new 4, totaling 5. You can change your votes as often as you wish.

Madman, per discussion with cg2, we thought we would keep both threads for those who didn't wish to be limited to just five per category. This way, folks may see something they hadn't thought of on the freestyle list that they may want on the voting list. I didn't care to put the work into consolidating the way cg2 does, and he kindly suggested we do it his way. Our lists are not competing. You may use one, the other, or both. No hurt feelings. There are advantages to cg2's method. I may drop mine next year, haven't decided. I'm sure GHQ will see your suggestion on either list.

OK. Then this list will be added to and massaged. Right now I can't think of everything. Also I come from a place where if someone else makes it and it is reasonable I can't see GHQ duplicating it. I would rather see something new or if what is available can be greatly improved upon then I am for it. So here goes.

Civilian vehicles; A mix of cars and SUVs.
I add my vote for Generic Civilians News crew, VIPs, first responders, close protection, PMCs and maybe an over decorated Generalissimo or two. Think objectives as much as window dressing.

WW2

Italy;

Generic:

Refugees, people carrying all their belongings including a few human powered single axle wagons some with more refugees and others with household goods. Don't forget children, some walking, some carried.

New Range 1930s

1930s Civilians. Half in standard poses and the other half reacting to the war around them.

The reason I mention civilians as much as I do is one of the rules I play is Hind & Seek for Soviet Afghan war. Treatment of them can and does have a part to play in game terms. Attacking troops near civilians, destroying buildings or crops, placement of mine fields not to mention actually attacking them has an impact on forces in real game terms. Mostly it affects your "reputation" which can aid you or your enemies in future scenarios.

It was a well known tactic employed by the Germans in early WWII to direct the flow of refugees in order to impede forces arriving at the front. Not to mention their use as human shields and potential suicide bombers. Even just as window dressing for scenarios civilians can help shape games.

One thing I don't understand is the Western Civilians pack. They look too much like people going about their business. I can't see them in any scenario. In a military situation they should be cowering, avoiding forces or possibly going Rambo. These minis would look right at home on a model train layout. Maybe that is what they are for. Even if faced with a zombie apocalypse I would assume some form of reaction, not just business as usual.
