I suppose if the flag question hasn't been answered yet it isn't going to be.

In Roman marching camps, the legionary standard was posted outside the entrance to the commander's tent and, beside it, was a brightly-burning torch. Everyone in the camp this knew where the leader was.

Let me add a bit to the question of the Papal army. Which of the officers who died at the Little Big horn had served in the Papal Guard?

The Papal Army was de facto terminated in 1870 with the unification of Italy, HOWEVER, it has morphed through several organizational definitions and missions since, so one might argue that it still exists. Don't know it's last commander. Ought to, but I can't locate cell in my brain.

That's properly the GATOR GUARD DRILL TEAM, and its commander the years specified was William Van Horn, who retired a colonel of Engineers and now happily roams, along with his beautiful wife, the Appalachian Trail. He has completed the length of the trail.

Thanks for the history lesson, PG - I did not know the story behind keeping the US flag illuminated. I also did not know that there was a former member of the Papal Army at Little Big Horn! Now I have some more research to do to find out! You are correct with 1870 - that was what I was looking for. After that it seems that there were smaller organizations (Swiss Guard, Noble Guard, Pontifical Gendarmerie) but nothing that was supposed to go to the field to fight a war.

I finished this book last year and I thought it was really interesting.

I knew you would know, Mr. Robel. You are correct, of course.

A surprising number of our military traditions can be traced as far back as the Romans. They may go farther back, but the Roman practice is more easily documented.

That does look like an interesting book. I think I read a review a while back. I need to order that one.

The other notable action for C/37 Armor during WWII Task Force Baum. A Medal of Honor recipient from 37th gave his name to Sadowski Field House at Fort Knox.

I have also noted that one 37th Regiment battalion sports the nickname "Bandits" and another, the "Iron Dukes.". These nicknames originally belonged to 1 -32AR and 3-32AR. When 3AD was deactivated after 1st Gulf, its units were reflagged as 1AD units, taking over their nicknames, as well. 1-32AR was the "Bandits" and 3-32AR was the "Iron Dukes."

Ok Jim, you can answer the question of the class that stars fell.
BTW, I’m not an old armor guy, not an armor guy.
