Hi Gang

I just wanted to post a couple of my photos. I'm learning how to do this so here goes. I have 2 pictures taken in 2001. One is a pair of Pz IVH's and the other a platoon of Pz III J's.

Thanks Diomede

I confess that it wasn't me that actually took these pictures but my very good friend Dale Graham. We shot these pictures with my tanks and terrain outdoors in March and April as we were helping GHQ do the pictures for their command packs in the new format. Here are some more. I hope you like them. Here are some T-34/85's. I reduced the images a bit.

Great looking horde of T-34's!

I seem to remember a thread here some months ago where someone described the turret markings used by the 10th Guards Tank Corps (61st, 62nd, and 63rd Guards Tank Brigades). Were those your tanks? Does anyone recall what the markings were or which decal set included them? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,

David

Great photos Pete. Very tidy. Can you remember what sort day it was when you took them? Sunny, overcast? I took the ones of my Panthers (some pages back) outside on an overcast day. They give a good idea of the colours, but seem a little flat. I've tried bright sunshine, but find over exposure can be a problem.

All suggestions greatly appreciated.

Regards

Matt

Hi Miffster and Diomede

Diomede. The tanks are from the 10th Guards Tank Corps. I pretty sure this is 3rd Brigade 1st Battalion because it has the 3 slashes underneath and the digits start with 1. I believe I did have 8Ball post one of these tanks previously but would have to go back and look.

Miffster. These shots were done on fairly sunny days in March and April here in Phoenix, Arizona. The shots were taken in the morning on my patio. If you are interested in a specific time my recollection is around 9 to 11AM. I think Dale did a great job. I admit I culled what I consider the best shots and there were several that were blurry but it was a learning process for the both of us.

Thanks, Pete.

That's what I was looking for. I'm in the process of repainting my own 10th Guards tanks and wanted to get the markings right this time. When I first did them up 15-20 years ago I wasn't as picky about things like that.

Hi Diomede

I need to make a correction to my previous post on the 10th Guards Tank. This actually represents 2nd Battalion, 3rd Brigade with the first digit in each case being 2 followed by the company number, starting with either 1 or 2 for 1st or 2nd company. The Battalion CO's tank is 2-00 and the company tanks start with 2-10 up to 2-19 for 1st company etc. I hope this helps.

Thanks, Pete! I was kind of wondering about that when I went back and took a closer look at the turret numbers. So your tanks represent the 1st Company of the 2nd Battalion of the 63rd Guards Tank Brigade, 10th Guards Tank Corps. Did I get it right this time?

Hi Diomede

You are correct. For the first 3 shots showing 3 tanks each, those are from 1st company, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Brigade. The "Group" shot shows most of the battalion although it is hard, for me at least, to ID individual tank numbers in the 4th photo. Sorry for the confusion my first post caused - I didn't look at the numbers prior to posting. Eventually when I am feeling really ambitious I will do the other 2 battalions. That will be awhile due to all the other projects that I have going on right now.

Here are a few more pictures of my Panzer IVH's taken in 2001. These were some additional shots that were done by Dale as we were taking pictures for the photos on the command pack.

The job you did with those models is one of the reasons why I went with GHQ, luv 'em. Thanks for showing more.

I have a question regarding extra sprues at $1.25. I didn't want to start another thread Knocking good ones off the page. As people probably know, I'm renovating a load of old models and I wanted to know whether the mg ring was the same for the M7 Priests, Greyhounds and M20s. And how many came on a sprue.

Also an unrelated question, I bought a pack of four 76m US anti tank guns last year, which were fixed to square bases, I can't seem to find them any more. Have they been discontinued. It would be good if GHQ sold packs of anti-tank guns without the prime movers. Anyone else agree.

I know this last bit should possibly be an e-mail to GHQ themselves, but I'd be interested in anyone elses comments.

Cheers

Hi Hetzen

Thanks very much for your kind words. I'm glad you enjoyed the pictures. Dale and I had a lot of fun taking them. I have owned GHQ stuff for 25 years now and became a dedicated GHQ fan in 1985 when I got back from 4 years in Germany and saw the new and improved really fantastic stuff they were doing. I do believe that they make the best vehicles in any scale which is the reason I haven't gone to larger scales myself.

To answer your question on the gun rings. The ring mounts are the same for the M-8 and M-20 but the Priests are different. I had some sprues of these that I checked to compare and the Priest is just a tad smaller in diameter and has a "lip" on the bottom that covers 1/2 the ring to fix it to the pulpit. You can use the same sprue for the M-8 and M-20 but will need to order the MG sprue for the Priest as a separate item.

It appears by looking at the catalog that the U.S. M-5 76mm AT gun that came molded to a base is no longer available. You might contact GHQ by phone to see if you can still get any that way. It appears that when the new model was released then the old model was retired in this case. The only other way would be to locate a hobby shop with a good selection of micro armor and see if they have any. Hobby shops with micro armor are getting more rare these days. I hope this helps.
Have a great day!

I definitely agree with you Jon. I would much prefer being able to buy artillery and prime movers seperately. Just as one example, GHQ makes a nice Italian SPA39 light truck, but the only way I can get them is to buy them 2 at a time along with 47mm AT guns. This makes buying the numbers of light trucks I need prohibitively expensive. Although I'm sure the combined packs please a lot of buyers, I would still like to have other options.
I have already made the same sort of argument on previous threads concerning horse-drawn artillery limbers. I would really love to see limbers with horse- teams offered as a seperate pack!

Jon,

Another source of "out of production" models is eBay -- I've picked up several packs of "no longer produced" models there. Of course, if other folks are looking for the same items, you can end up spending more for them than if no one else wants them and you're the only bidder.

Pete notes the increasing scarcity of hobby shops carrying GHQ's miniatures; I would add to that an observation that the hobby shops themselves seem to become scarcer, as more and more folks turn to the Internet for their hobby needs. While I thoroughly understand the need to "stretch the hobby dollar", I also bemoan the increasing lack of hobby shops. I still deliberately go there to purchase items I could buy "a little cheaper" elsewhere -- the Internet cannot replace the ability to pick up an item, look it over, and decide whether or not to take it home with me now. And when I run out of super glue... or find that the paint bottle I thought I'd sealed wasn't... or run out of ground foam in the middle of a scenicing project -- it is so wonderful to have a well-stocked hobby shop just a few minutes away! (One plus of living in a fairly big city, I guess...)

Sadly, though -- this shop stopped carrying miniatures (of all types) several years ago. While I was able to "take advantage" of the "going out of (this end of the) business" sale -- I can no longer go there and check out what's new, etc. -- and I do miss that! But they still sell lots of other "goodies", and have all the paint, glue, etc. I need.

Tom Stockton
