After a closer inspection-the cupola does not have an antenna mount ( I also think the guy holding the front of his Kevlar helmut just found out the guy outside ordered anchovies on the pizza! :x )

Each standard AAV had 4 antenas. This was for the infantry commander and comm links for the company and battalion. The command version does not have a turret and the AAV pictured has the new 40mm gernade launcher system. I drove the AAV's before the new turret systems.

Paul thanks for the amtracker perspective clearing up that a standard trac can mount up to four antennas.

From my experience on the grunt side, the only tracs I saw with an antenna set up like Paul K's photo would have been at the infantry battalion HQ or higher. Plus the number of 10' whip antennas coming out of the troop compartment indicates something of more importance, from an enemy perspective, than a standard P7. A rifle company just doesn't have that numberof radio sets, aside from the one's the trac is apparently capable of supporting, to throw up that number of nets.

paul & pmaidhof;
The AAV pictured could be set up as an observer's/umpire's track for a FTX/wargame. Saw that done a long time ago on LVTP-5A1's. Not enough command tracks to go around.

You know..if you read the first sentence of the caption under the picture,it does not state that this vehicle in the picture IS an AAVC7, the statement just says that the AAVC7 is a version of the AAVP7

Of course you're right it doesn't explicitly state it but the positioning of the caption under the photo of a track with numerous radios and a guy on foot talking on a set is a pretty big implied statement, enough to cause my confusion anyway. (Which I admit might not be all that high a threshold).

On to another question. I've read about the new amtrack, the EFV (Expeditionary Fighting Vehicle), but haven't seen anything lately. Bell-Textron in New Orleans is still reorganizing after Katrina. Has anyone heard any news lately?

I'm "Old Corps" (0311 playing 0321, 1970-72), but I try to keep up with you "New Corps" types. Thanks for keeping this forum going. I've learned alot. Didn't know we had this many of Uncle Sam's Misguided Children though. Semper Fi!

Hey Shortround! I got out in 85 and feel old corps when looking at all the new toys the corps is playing with. LAV's as scouts? When I was in "we didn't need no stinkin scouts!" :lol: That's why the tanks were always behind us.

I was trained by several very memorable Vietnam Vets. I can tell you, get your jungle training from a 45+ yr old staff SGT, gunny & first shirt. You gain a new appreciation of bad *ss.

So Semper Fi! 2nd BN 1st Marines
I pray for Peace on Earth Good will toward men. Till then one round HE fire for Effect!

Roger that! Mine were from WW2 (Iwo & Okinawa -- REAL Old Corps), but mostly Korea & early Nam.

When I'm done with my modern MEU, I might build a BLT from '68. Or maybe a Royal Marine Commando. Thomas? They are also pretty good.

I was in error last post. General Dynamics is the prime contractor for the EFV. Bell-Textron is a subcontractor.This my not be the correct forum, but I thought I'd share the info. The ASV (M-1117) plant is relocating to Slidell, LA (north of New Orleans). The small assembly plant there will expand, and production will increase. Should be finished relocating this summer. The MP's will be happy. Maybe GHQ will give us one soon.
