Ben,

The book, booklet really, I have is from the Mini Color Series. It has a pretty good spread on the TPz-1 which is why I bought it. It only has a couple of pages on the Fennek dealing with the competition for the next recce vehicle. The French VBL and one other vehicle whose name escape me at the moment were competing against the Fennek and obviously the Fennek won.

Hi Paul,

aah - I see it is the Concord title. The other vehicle was the Zobel (a nice one as well and amphibious).
I read that you want to build some vehicles with the optronic-mast in travelling mode, I have news on that:
Pit told me yesterday, that the optronic-mast is not visible in travelling condition. In fact the mast retracts totally and is covered by a hatch when not in use. He has some detail shots of that if I got him right. Hopefully he will post some...

Best greetings fom the Kraut

Ben,

Thanks I was hoping to get confirmation that the mast stows completly inside the hull when not needed. I have seen some pictures with the Fennek driving around with no mast exposed and some driving with the mast just outside the hull but not fully raised. For my vehicles in travel mode I'm just not gluing the mast to the hull. Look forward to seeing some pictures from pit.

Yes, the Zobel! I thought that looked like a pretty cool design as well. What happened in the competition?

Hi Paul,

I will "force" Pit to post some of his photos.

The competition was a bit typical for the Germans...
I will try to explain  :
The first attempts to find a replacement for the in-service Recce vehicles were taking place during the cold-war (if I remember right). With changing demands the Zobel was regarded to be too complicated and too expensive. The VBL was dropped as it didn't meet the German Army needs. However the program was joined by the Netherlands, they didn't require amphibious capabilities and so on...
During the following process the Fennek was born and is now introduced in Germany and the Netherlands.

May this be of help,
Cheers Ben

Does anyone know of other uses for the Fennek, could they be a viable replacement for a humvee as a transport for liason personnel, internally, could they be reconfigured to carry more troops? I've read that it has a crew of 3, but if the surv mast and gear were removed, could a 4th person be fit?

I've never been inside the vehicle, as you can tell.

But the Fennek is also used as
Artillery observer (Germany)
Joint fire support team (in development for germany)
Command and operations vehicle (in service with Dutch and german pioneers)
Dutch MRAT (medium-range anti-tank) variant,
Fennek with Stinger SAM for the Dutch Forces.

Maybe you can put a seat more in this vehicle.
But this vehicle isn´t developed for troop-transport.
If you need a wheeld-vehicle for troops (which is mineprotected) the german army use the Dingo1 or Dingo2 vehicles.

Hi all,

I am not 100% sure but if I remember right the Netherlands have plans for a Fennek version which for example is intended for stuff like convoy escort.

Have to look for detailed info if required.

Hi,
Ben is right.
It is the Command and operations vehicle (in service with Dutch and german pioneers).
Or Fennek AD (Allgemeiner Diienst = general service) this vehicles hasn´t an optronic-mast.

Ben and Pit,

Thank you for the additional info. Now I'll have to get another batch of vehicles for my NL force.

I hope the Germans and/or the Dutch don't get into a scrap with anybody using the BRDM 2. They look very similar...
